Biosorption of V(V) onto Lantana camara biochar modified by H3PO4: Characteristics, mechanism, and regenerative capacity

Kexin Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the adsorption of vanadium by biochar prepared from an invasive plant species. The results show that H3PO4 activated biochar has a high adsorption capacity for V(V), and the adsorption process is pH-dependent. The primary mechanisms for V(V) adsorption on activated biochar are electrostatic interaction, complexation reaction, and redox reaction.

Exploring effects of novel chemical modification of biochar on soil water retention and crack suppression: towards commercialization of production of biochar for soil remediation

Yongxue An et al.

Summary: This study focused on the impact of chemically modified biochar on soil cracking and water retention. Results showed that H3PO4-modified biochar had a greater effect on water retention compared to KOH-modified biochar, which reduced hydrophilic functional groups on the biochar's surface.

Effects of phosphorous precursors and speciation on reducing bioavailability of heavy metal in paddy soil by engineered biochars

Han Zhang et al.

Summary: Ammonium phosphate (AP), phosphoric acid (PC), and potassium phosphate (TKP) were employed to modify biochar for enhanced heavy metal passivation in soil. Different phosphorus precursors showed varying effects, with P speciation playing a crucial role in the immobilization of Cd2+. Specific phosphorus forms can promote the passivation of Cd2+ through complex formation, highlighting the potential for modified biochar in soil remediation based on P-related technologies.

A potential ZrO2 doped scandium tantalite ceramics for thermal/environmental barrier coating material

Fuxing Ye et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of ZrO2 doping on the thermal expansion coefficient of ScTaO4 material, showing that ZrO2 doping can reduce the thermal expansion coefficient of ScTaO4 and alleviate the thermal expansion coefficient difference in thermal/environmental barrier coating systems. Under high-temperature corrosion conditions, Zr4+ ions are separated from the alloy, leading to the decomposition of the material into ScTaO4 and t-ZrO2. Additionally, only t-ZrO2 is found in the corrosion products, indicating that ScTaO4 can enhance the high-temperature phase stability of t-ZrO2 and prevent phase transformation to m-ZrO2.

Enhanced adsorption of aqueous Pb(II) by modified biochar produced through pyrolysis of watermelon seeds

Waqas Ahmed et al.

Summary: Biochar obtained from watermelon seeds was successfully modified by H2O2 treatment and showed enhanced Pb(II) adsorption compared to unmodified biochar. The modified biochar exhibited promising potential for cost-effective Pb(II) removal from water/wastewater, in line with circular economy principles, and without adverse environmental impacts. Overall, the study highlights the importance of effective waste/by-product recycling for human and environmental health protection.
