Influence of Methylation and Polymerization on Flocculant Properties of Bovine Blood

Changhoon Lee et al.

Summary: The study found that simple chemical treatments can improve the utility of blood as a flocculant for negatively charged solids. Methylation and polymerization reactions had expected effects on the isoelectric point and molar mass of the blood. MeBB showed good performance in a wide range of pH values but was sensitive to overdosing. PolyBB performed similar to NBB, while PMBB showed modest improvements in overdose sensitivity. For hematite suspensions, PolyBB performed well, but MeBB and PMBB had poor results.

Enhancement of protein flocculant properties through carboxyl group methylation and the relationship with protein structural changes

Rafael A. Garcia et al.

Summary: The study showed that the methylation of proteins quickly enhances flocculant activity at the beginning of the reaction, even before most carboxyl groups are methylated. The methylation reaction has unintended effects on protein structure and aggregation, which may play a significant role in enhancing protein flocculant activity. The observed enhancement in flocculant activity results from both charge and structural modifications.
