Adsorption and thermal degradation of microplastics from aqueous solutions by Mg/Zn modified magnetic biochars

Jun Wang et al.

Summary: The study introduces efficient Mg/Zn modified magnetic biochar adsorbents for microplastic removal, showing high removal efficiencies in removing polystyrene microspheres from aqueous solutions. The adsorption process is attributed to electrostatic and chemical bonding interactions. Real water components can influence the removal efficiency, highlighting the competitive adsorption effect. Thermal treatment facilitates microplastic degradation and adsorbent regeneration, maintaining high removal efficiency even after multiple cycles. These low-cost, eco-friendly Mg/Zn-MBCs show promising potential for microplastic removal applications.

The stimulation of microbial activity by microplastic contributes to membrane fouling in ultrafiltration

Xuejun Xiong et al.

Summary: Research has shown that dissolved organic carbon from plastics can stimulate microbial activity in the ocean, but not in freshwater systems. Microplastics, specifically polyethylene (PE), were found to increase microbial activity and extracellular polymeric substance production in natural surface water. The presence of microplastics led to a more hydrophobic and dense biofouling layer on membranes, with specific components of extracellular polymeric substances aggravating membrane fouling. Microbial diversity was also affected by the addition of microplastics in the water.

Microplastic ingestion by small coastal fish in the northern Baltic Sea, Finland

Erika Sainio et al.

Summary: The ingestion of microplastics was investigated in four species of small coastal fish from the northern Baltic Sea. 9% of sampled fish were found to have ingested microplastics, with the highest prevalence found in specimens from the urban area of Helsinki. No correlation was found between the size or species of the fish and the presence of ingested microplastic particles, nor the amount of microplastics in seawater. Comparisons to a previous study suggest that microplastic ingestion is more common in coastal fish than offshore fish in the northern Baltic Sea.
