Kt/V: achievement, predictors and relationship to mortality in hemodialysis patients in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries: results from DOPPS (2012-18)

Ali AlSahow et al.

Summary: In the Gulf Cooperation Council, a relatively large proportion of hemodialysis patients have low Kt/V levels. Study findings suggest that increasing blood flow rate to equal or greater than 350 mL/min and dialysis time to equal or greater than 4 hours thrice weekly can reduce the prevalence of low Kt/V, particularly improving survival rates among women.

Oil-Membrane Protection of Electrochemical Sensors for Fouling-and pH-Insensitive Detection of Lipophilic Analytes

Yuchan Yuan et al.

Summary: This paper presents an oil membrane sensor protection technique to prevent interference and degradation of electrochemical sensors due to uncontrolled pH, salinity, or foulants in sample solutions. The technique allows for the permeation of hydrophobic analytes while blocking common hydrophilic interferents, demonstrating continuous cortisol detection with a 5 min concentration-on rise time and maintaining signal measurement for at least 7 h even in extreme acidic conditions.

Beta-2 microglobulin and all-cause mortality in the era of high-flux hemodialysis: results from the Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study

Eiichiro Kanda et al.

Summary: The study found a tenfold decrease in DRA-related hospitalization rates from 1998 to 2018. Even in the current era of high-flux HD, serum beta 2M remains positively associated with mortality, with mortality risk increasing monotonically with increasing beta 2M levels.

A machine learning approach for deriving spectral absorption coefficients of optically active oceanic constituents

Srinivas Kolluru et al.

Summary: This study utilized machine learning models to partition the absorption coefficients of different optically active substances in water, providing insights into light interaction with various materials. In model performance evaluation, the Extremely Randomized Trees and bagging method models showed higher scores and shorter computational time compared to existing models.

Beer-Lambert law for optical tissue diagnostics: current state of the art and the main limitations

Ilze Oshina et al.

Summary: The Beer-Lambert law is a widely used tool for measuring absorber concentration, but there may be errors in real measurement conditions due to various uncertainties and influences. Current research focuses on extending and modifying the law to more accurately describe the optical properties and physiological parameters of living tissues. The ultimate goal is to obtain more reliable data on tissue status and biochemical content.

Dialysis Adequacy and Risk of Dementia in Elderly Hemodialysis Patients

Hyung Woo Kim et al.

Summary: The study found a link between dialysis adequacy and the risk of developing dementia in elderly hemodialysis patients. Increased dialysis clearance was associated with lower incidences of overall dementia and Alzheimer's disease, with an inverse relationship between the risks of developing dementia and single-pool Kt/V levels.

Optical Method and Biochemical Source for the Assessment of the Middle-Molecule Uremic Toxin β2-Microglobulin in Spent Dialysate

Joosep Paats et al.

Summary: The study developed an optical method to estimate the removal of middle molecule uremic toxin beta 2-microglobulin during hemodialysis treatment, with a high correlation coefficient between laboratory and optically estimated concentrations. The optical signal of the middle molecule fraction in spent dialysate was mainly identified as tryptophan in small peptides and proteins, and advanced glycation end-products.
