Reactivity of γ-glutamyl-cysteine with intracellular and extracellular glutathione metabolic enzymes

Misa Muraoka et al.

Summary: Gamma-glutamyl-cysteine (gamma-EC) acts as a precursor for glutathione (GSH) biosynthesis and serves as a substrate for certain GSH metabolic enzymes, providing amino acids necessary for GSH formation, thereby contributing to antioxidant defense properties.

Does oxygen affect ageing mechanisms of Pinus densiflora seeds? A matter of cytoplasmic physical state

Davide Gerna et al.

Summary: Seed ageing mechanisms are influenced by the physical state of the cytoplasm. Oxygen promotes lipid peroxidation and seed viability loss when the cytoplasm is glassy, but not when it is fluid. Hypoxic conditions delay seed deterioration, lipid peroxidation, and decline of antioxidants only when the cytoplasm is glassy. When the cytoplasm is fluid, seed deterioration occurs at the same rate regardless of oxygen availability, with limited lipid peroxidation and detoxification of lipid peroxide products.

Analyses of metabolic activity in peanuts under hermetic storage at different relative humidity levels

Steven P. C. Groot et al.

Summary: Research shows that peanuts are prone to lipid oxidation at low water activity levels during storage, while increased levels of FFAs and fungal growth occur at higher water activity levels. Storing peanuts under nitrogen gas can effectively reduce these quality issues.

How dry is dry? Molecular mobility in relation to thallus water content in a lichen

Fabio Candotto Carniel et al.

Summary: Lichens have high tolerance to desiccation and can withstand extreme dry conditions. Research shows that in the desiccated state, lichen cytoplasm transitions to a "glassy" state, causing metabolism to cease and enzyme activity to be affected.
