Responses of silicate weathering intensity to the Pliocene-Quaternary cooling in East and Southeast Asia

Fangliang Li et al.

Summary: Silicate weathering plays a key role in maintaining a habitable climate on Earth. Over the past 4 million years, weathering intensity has been decreasing, corresponding to global cooling. East Asia shows a more sensitive response to temperature change compared to Southeast Asia, possibly due to amplified midlatitude cooling.

Monsoon-Enhanced Silicate Weathering as a New Atmospheric CO2 Consumption Mechanism Contributing to Fast Late Miocene Global Cooling

Yibo Yang et al.

Summary: The research indicates a significant increase in silicate weathering intensity in the Chinese Loess Plateau and northeastern Tibetan Plateau around 7 million years ago, caused by enhanced monsoon activity. This additional sink of atmospheric CO2 may have contributed to the large CO2 consumption and fast global cooling in the late Miocene, ultimately leading to the onset of the Northern Hemisphere glaciation around 7 million years ago.

Himalayan-Tibetan Erosion Is Not the Cause of Neogene Global Cooling

Peter D. Clift et al.

Summary: The study indicates that the chemical weathering flux in the Himalayas and Tibetan Plateau decreased by 50% during a certain period, especially in the Indus river system, contradicting the idea of global cooling during that time.

Global Change Modulated Asian Inland Climate Since 7.3 Ma: Carbonate Manganese Records in the Western Qaidam Basin

Yudong Liu et al.

Summary: This study presents a continuous record of climate change in the Asian inland over the past 7.3 million years, reconstructed by analyzing the redox evolution of a paleolake in the western Qaidam Basin of the NE Tibetan Plateau. The regional climate fluctuations are consistent with the coeval global climate evolution, especially the high-latitude cooling of the Northern Hemisphere. The drying of the Asian inland is argued to be dominantly forced by global cooling, particularly the high-latitude cooling of the Northern Hemisphere.

Global chemical weathering dominated by continental arcs since the mid-Palaeozoic

Thomas M. Gernon et al.

Summary: The length of continental volcanic arcs has the strongest control on global chemical weathering fluxes; the stabilization of Earth's surface temperature is due to the rapid drawdown of carbon dioxide tied to arc weathering; processes such as continental arc tectonics, volcanic outgassing and silicate-rock weathering are closely interrelated and also affect the global climate.

Evolution of the Miocene megalake in the western Qaidam Basin, northwestern China

Yu Liang et al.

Summary: Research indicates that the megalake in the Qaidam Basin on the northeast Tibetan Plateau experienced significant water level fluctuations during the mid- and late Miocene, controlled by global climatic conditions. Overall, the lake shrank under relatively cool conditions and expanded under relatively warm conditions, gradually dwindling over time.
