Evading strength and ductility trade-off in an inverse nacre structured magnesium matrix nanocomposite

Xi Luo et al.

Summary: The study proposes an innovative strategy called inverse nacre structure, which embeds elongated and curled soft constituents in a matrix of hard constituent to create an ordered brick-and-mortar arrangement. This strategy has been applied in a particle reinforced metal matrix composite, resulting in a nanocomposite with high strength and especially high tensile elongation. The tailored inverse nacre structure contributes to a stable microcrack-multiplication process, promoting strain hardening and maintaining the post-ultimate tensile strength. This strategy is not limited to specific materials and offers a generic pathway for developing high-performance materials for engineering applications.

Exceptional mechanical properties of aluminum matrix composites with heterogeneous structure induced by in-situ graphene nanosheet-Cu hybrids

Bowen Pu et al.

Summary: This study presents an innovative strategy to fabricate Al matrix composites with heterogeneous structures by synthesizing graphene nanosheet-Cu reinforced Al matrix composites with core-shell grain structure. The fabricated composite exhibits multiple microstructural heterogeneities, leading to outstanding mechanical properties and exceptional toughness. The coordinated deformation and crack bridging/blunting behaviors contribute to the superior performance of the composite.

Mechanical and wear properties of SiCp/CNT/Al6061 hybrid metal matrix composites

Pham Van Trinh et al.

Summary: 6061 aluminum matrix composites with hybrid reinforcements of CNTs and SiCp were prepared by spark plasma sintering. The hybrid composites showed significant improvements in mechanical properties and reduced friction coefficient and wear rate compared to composites without CNTs. However, the effect of CNTs on friction and wear became less significant with increasing applied load.

Improving ductility of bimodal carbon nanotube/2009Al composites by optimizing coarse grain microstructure via hot extrusion

K. Ma et al.

Summary: Bimodal carbon nanotube reinforced 2009Al composites were prepared by powder metallurgy and extrusion, showing an increase in grain size with extrusion temperature in coarse grain bands and a double yield phenomenon. The extrusion temperature had a significant impact on the ductility and ultimate tensile strength of the composites, with higher temperatures leading to increased ductility and stable ultimate tensile strength.

Enhanced strain hardening by bimodal grain structure in carbon nanotube reinforced Al-Mg composites

Xiaowen Fu et al.

Summary: In this study, bimodal microstructures were prepared in CNT/Al-Mg composites with the weight fraction of coarse grains. The sample with 25 wt% coarse grains showed improved plastic deformation behavior and higher strain hardening ability. The uniform micro-strain distribution in the CG25 sample was attributed to the constrained deformation of soft coarse-grain phase by hard CNT-enriched UFG Al-Mg phase.

Structure optimization for improving the strength and ductility of heterogeneous carbon nanotube/Al-Cu-Mg composites

Summary: Heterogeneous carbon nanotube (CNT)/Al-Cu-Mg composites with ductile zones (DZs) and brittle zones (BZs) were fabricated, where the grain size and width of DZs were controlled by high energy ball milling (HEBM) for improved strength-ductility. Under optimized conditions, the heterogeneous composite showed a significant increase in elongation and tensile strength compared to the uniform composite, with appropriate grain refinement in the DZs alleviating low yield phenomenon and reducing stress concentration in the BZs.
