ROS-scavenging-associated transcriptional and biochemical shifts during nectarine fruit development and ripening

Nuria Vall-llaura et al.

Summary: This study investigated the changes in ROS and their scavenging systems during nectarine fruit development and ripening and found a complex reprogramming of ROS-related transcriptome and metabolome. The activation of specific ethylene response factors and the accumulation of antioxidant compounds were observed at earlier fruit developmental stages, while a decrease in respiration rate and reduction of ERF1 genes led to higher accumulation of H2O2 at later stages. The study suggests that H2O2 may not only be a by-product of ROS-scavenging but also a signaling molecule during nectarine fruit ripening.

Scrutinising the relationship between major physiological and compositional changes during 'Merrill O'Henry' peach growth with brown rot susceptibility

Nuria Baro-Montel et al.

Summary: The susceptibility of 'Merrill O'Henry' peaches to brown rot varied across different phenological stages, with significantly lower susceptibility observed at 49 and 126 days after full bloom. The lower susceptibility was associated with changes in ethylene and respiration patterns, as well as sugars and organic acids content in the fruit. A strong negative relationship between citric acid, and a positive association of ethylene with peach susceptibility to Monilinia spp. at diverse phenological stages were observed.

Deciphering the Monilinia fructicola Genome to Discover Effector Genes Possibly Involved in Virulence

Laura Vilanova et al.

Summary: This study aimed to generate a high-quality genome of M. fructicola and to identify genes that may contribute to pathogen virulence. Using PacBio sequencing technology, the genome of M. fructicola was assembled, resulting in 10,086 trustworthy gene models. A set of 134 putative effectors was defined, with some triggering necrotic lesions when transiently expressed in Nicotiana benthamiana plants. This research will help better understand the interaction between M. fructicola and stone fruit host plants.
