Occurrence and spatial distribution of microplastics, and their correlation with petroleum in coastal waters of Hainan Island, China*

Liu Gao et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the distribution, abundance, morphology, and composition of microplastics (MPs) in surface seawater and sediment of Hainan Island. The results showed that the abundance of MPs in seawater was similar to other areas of the South China Sea, while the abundance in sediment was higher. The predominant shape of MPs was linear and fragmented, with polyethylene terephthalate (PET) being the dominant polymer, possibly originating from laundry wastewater. The petroleum concentration was positively correlated with MPs pollution in seawater.

Fate, source and mass budget of sedimentary microplastics in the Bohai Sea and the Yellow Sea

Mingyu Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fate, sources, and mass budget of microplastics in the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea. The results show that river discharge and maritime activities are the main pathways for microplastics to enter these seas, and most of the microplastics are deposited in sediments. The study highlights the importance of sedimentary microplastics in preventing further transport to the Pacific Ocean.

Vertical microplastic distribution in sediments of Fuhe River estuary to Baiyangdian Wetland in Northern China

Zeyan Zhou et al.

Summary: The study on the vertical microplastic distribution in estuary sediment of Fuhe River in northern China revealed that microplastic content decreased with depth, with the highest content in the topmost sediment layer. The smaller particle size and higher proportion of colored microplastics were found in deeper sediment layers. The spatial distribution of microplastics in sediments was closely related to human activities, with higher content in areas with more intense human activities.

Mengyang Liu et al.

Summary: The intrusion of the Kuroshio has an impact on the abundance and composition of microplastics in the South China Sea, but it is not the dominant influencing factor. The effects of the Kuroshio intrusion appear to be a combination of dilution and biogeochemical influences. Further research is needed to understand the comprehensive impact of Kuroshio intrusion on microplastics fate in the Western Boundary Current system.

Aged microplastics decrease the bioavailability of coexisting heavy metals to microalga Chlorella vulgaris

Zezheng Wang et al.

Summary: Environmental aging of ubiquitous microplastics affects the growth of microalgae, with aged microplastics showing greater inhibition than virgin microplastics. Heavy metals such as copper and cadmium also significantly inhibit cell growth, and toxicity increases with higher concentrations. The combined toxicity of aged microplastics with heavy metals is less than that of individual heavy metals, indicating a potential interaction between different pollutants.
