System dynamics to assess the effectiveness of restoration scenarios for the Urmia Lake: A prey-predator approach for the human-environment uncertain interactions

Seyed Ershad Barhagh et al.

Summary: This study models restoration scenarios of Urmia Lake using a system dynamics method based on the prey-predator approach and finds that agricultural water consumption has the most significant impact on the lake volume. Decreasing irrigated land area, improving irrigation efficiency, reducing lake area, and inter-basin water transfer all contribute to increasing the lake water level.

Mapping the spatiotemporal variability of salinity in the hypersaline Lake Urmia using Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 imagery

Majid Bayati et al.

Summary: The study introduces an adaptive learning model combining in-situ measurements, satellite imagery, and machine learning algorithms to estimate the spatiotemporal changes of water surface salinity concentration in saline lakes. The research demonstrates that the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model provides the most accurate relationship between salinity concentration and water surface reflectance. The study also reveals a significant difference in salinity concentration between the northern and southern parts of the lake during high flows, with the southern part playing a dominant role in controlling salinity dynamics in the entire lake.

Environmental degradation at Lake Urmia (Iran): exploring the causes and their impacts on rural livelihoods

Matthias Schmidt et al.

Summary: Over the past 20 years, Lake Urmia has suffered severe environmental degradation, leading to desiccation and impacting rural livelihoods. The study found that rural communities heavily rely on the ecosystem services of the lake basin, which are threatened by environmental degradation, causing decline in tourism and agriculture and prompting migration to cities.
