Microplastics change soil properties, heavy metal availability and bacterial community in a Pb-Zn-contaminated soil

Xueying Feng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impacts of different types of Microplastics (MPs) on Pb-Zn contaminated soil and found that MPs, especially at a dose of 2%, decreased the richness and diversity of bacterial communities, altered microbial community composition, and significantly affected soil properties and heavy metal availability. The effects were dependent on the type and dose of MPs.

Occurrence and distribution of micro/nanoplastics in soils and their phytotoxic effects: A review

Sukhendu Maity et al.

Summary: This review examines the distribution and phytotoxicity of micro/nanoplastics in the soil environment, as well as the mechanisms of root uptake and mode of action. It finds that the partitioning of micro/nanoplastics to different soil matrices can affect their bioavailability to plants, and that uptake occurs through cellular endocytosis and aquaporin channels. The shape of the polymers also influences their uptake, and their bioaccumulation induces oxidative stress and alters gene expressions and metabolic pathways in plants.

Transcriptomic and metabolic responses of earthworms to contaminated soil with polypropylene and polyethylene microplastics at environmentally relevant concentrations

Keyi Chen et al.

Summary: Examining the transcriptomic and metabolic responses of earthworms to microplastic-contaminated soil is crucial for understanding the molecular-level toxicity of microplastics. This study investigated the effects of environmentally relevant concentrations of polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) microplastics on earthworms at various levels. The findings revealed that PP and PE induced oxidative stress, damaged the digestive and immune systems, disrupted lipid metabolism, and affected osmoregulation extent in earthworms.

Abundance and distribution characteristics of microplastic in plateau cultivated land of Yunnan Province, China

Bin Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the pollution characteristics of microplastics in cultivated soil in Yunnan Province, revealing high levels of microplastic abundance mainly derived from plastic mulch. Various morphologies of microplastics were found in soil, and they exhibited different degrees of aging due to environmental factors. The findings emphasize the importance of paying more attention to microplastic pollution in inland soil.

Selective enrichment of antibiotic resistance genes and pathogens on polystyrene microplastics in landfill leachate

Jianhong Shi et al.

Summary: This study found that antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) on polystyrene microplastics (MPs) were selectively enriched, closely associated with MPs, and pathogens in the surrounding environment were also enriched on MPs. The presence of MPs did not significantly affect the abundances of ARGs, MGEs, and bacterial communities in the surrounding leachate within 60 days.

Microplastic residues in wetland ecosystems: Do they truly threaten the plant-microbe-soil system?

Hongwei Yu et al.

Summary: The study found that microplastics have negative impacts on wetland plant growth performance, soil microbial community structure, and soil chemical properties. The addition of microplastics alters seed germination strategies, reduces plant growth, and affects chlorophyll synthesis. Additionally, microplastics increase the concentration of reactive oxygen species in soil, leading to decreased soil enzyme activity.
