Examining the perspectives of using manure from livestock farms as fertilizer to crop fields based on a realistic simulation

Andreas Kamilaris et al.

Summary: This study examines the transformation of livestock manure into fertilizer to reduce pollution. It was found that applying treatment units on selected cow farms for composting manure is effective, while treatment units in pig farms are not cost-effective. The study utilized a centralized optimal algorithm and real-world constraints in a simulation based on geolocalized data from Catalonia, Spain.

Contribution of enrofloxacin and Cu2+ to the antibiotic resistance of bacterial community in a river biofilm

Congcong Liu et al.

Summary: Pollutants discharged from wastewater, particularly enrofloxacin (ENR), significantly increase antibiotic resistance genes in river biofilm bacterial communities, with ENR being the major selective agent driving taxonomic composition changes. The co-occurrence of antibiotic resistance genes and metal resistance genes reveal that multidrug efflux pumps play a key role in connecting metal resistance and antibiotic resistance. This study emphasizes the impact of antibiotics on the development of antibiotic resistance in river biofilms.

Application of manure from cattle administered antibiotics has sustained multi-year impacts on soil resistome and microbial community structure

Sarah Shawver et al.

Summary: The study found that repeated application of manure from cattle administered antibiotics can impact soil microbial community structure and abundance of antibiotic resistance genes for up to three years. Cattle manure treated with antibiotics had a more significant effect on soil bacterial communities compared to manure from antibiotic-free cattle, but had minimal impact on fungal communities.
