Summary: While the frequency and intensity of floods are increasing globally, the indirect effects of pollutants remobilized and redistributed during flood events are often overlooked. A global examination of floods caused by extreme events and the subsequent distribution of sediment-bound pollutants is essential to improve interdisciplinary investigations and develop action plans to address environmental pollution issues from flooding. Action plans for river basins and coastal lowlands need to balance flood retention, catchment conservation, and economical water use.

Assessing the genotoxic potential of freshwater sediments after extensive rain events-Lessons learned from a case study in an effluent-dominated river in Germany

Summary: Effluents from wastewater treatment plants and rainwater overflow basins can introduce genotoxic micropollutants into aquatic ecosystems. This study investigated the genotoxic potential of freshwater sediments in a small anthropogenically impacted river in Germany during dry periods and after rainfall events. The results showed that organic sediment extracts contained genotoxic compounds, primarily polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, nitroarenes, aromatic amines, and polycyclic heteroarenes.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the swimming behavior of zebrafish can serve as a biomarker for assessing neurotoxic effects of waterborne contaminants. By observing changes in swimming strength, the impact of different chemicals on the nervous system can be reflected. Findings from exposing zebrafish to various chemicals suggest that organophosphorus flame retardants and pesticides have similar neurotoxic effects on zebrafish.

A workshop with international representatives has resulted in consensus perspectives and recommendations to improve the integration of basic and translational sciences with regulatory practices.
