Climate change research in southern Africa in recent two decades: progress, needs, and policy implications

Alpo Kapuka et al.

Summary: This study investigated the progress of climate change research in Southern Africa from 2000 to 2019. The findings showed an increasing number of publications focusing on different aspects of climate change, with a particular emphasis on South Africa. Agriculture was the most addressed topic, but social aspects of climate change gained more attention in recent years. Local case studies were dominant, while regional studies and the use of advanced methodologies were less common. The study also highlighted the increasing ability of African authors to contribute to global discussions about climate change.

Worldclim 2.1 versus Worldclim 1.4: Climatic niche and grid resolution affect between-version mismatches in Habitat Suitability Models predictions across Europe

Francesco Cerasoli et al.

Summary: The influence of climate on taxa distribution has been extensively studied using Habitat Suitability Models (HSMs) and the Worldclim database. This study evaluated the prediction mismatch between HSMs fitted with different versions of climate surfaces, focusing on Europe. The results showed that HSMs failed to accurately retrieve the simulated climate-occurrence relationships for certain species under current climate conditions. However, the emission scenarios and climate models did not significantly influence the prediction discrepancies between versions for future climate scenarios.

Choice of climate data affects the performance and interpretation of species distribution models

Umarfarooq A. Abdulwahab et al.

Summary: The choice of climate data can affect the performance of climate-based species distribution models (CSDMs), with different datasets leading to overprediction or underestimation of species distributions. Therefore, the effects of different climate data should be considered when developing and applying climate models.

Contributions to the Improvement of Climate Data Availability and Quality for Sub-Saharan Africa

Frank Kaspar et al.

Summary: Reliable weather observations are crucial for assessing climate change and variability, but long time series of weather observations are limited in many countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. Various national and international activities are underway to improve the availability and quality of climate databases. This paper presents ongoing international efforts, highlighting examples hosted by Germany's national meteorological service. Further activities are identified as necessary.

Challenges and opportunities of species distribution modelling of terrestrial arthropod predators

Stefano Mammola et al.

Summary: Species distribution models are essential tools for ecologists to explore species distributions and answer questions related to biogeography, climate change, and conservation biology. Most studies focused on well-known organisms or charismatic and economically important arthropod species, with limited research on terrestrial arthropod predators. The use of SDMs in mapping the geography of arthropod predators is still in a nascent stage, with potential for future research using modern data sources and new modeling approaches.

Forecasting the effects of bioclimatic characteristics and climate change on the potential distribution of Colophospermum mopane in southern Africa using Maximum Entropy (Maxent)

Boniface K. Ngarega et al.

Summary: This study used the Maxent model algorithm to analyze the geographical distribution of suitable habitats for Colophospermum mopane in southern Africa, finding that the distribution of this species is influenced by solar radiation, annual temperature range, and annual precipitation. As climate change scenarios develop, suitable habitat area changes occur with reductions in the northern limits and expansions in the southern limits.

Fen Kong et al.

Summary: The study on the potential geographic distribution of Osmanthus fragrans using models showed that environmental factors play a crucial role in determining the species suitability. The highly suitable habitats of O. fragrans are mainly distributed across several provinces in China, and under climate change scenarios, the suitable distribution area will decrease and shift to the southwest.

Winner-Loser Species Replacements in Human-Modified Landscapes

Bruno K. C. Filgueiras et al.

Summary: Community assembly plays a key role in driving the provision of ecosystem services, with 'winner and loser' replacements in tropical forests showing significant impacts on ecological organization. Most replacements involve native species and are driven by changes in resource availability. Species dispersal is a powerful force controlling community (re)assembly, leading to a complete functional reorganization of assemblages.

Climate change impacts on ecosystems and adaptation options in nine countries in southern Africa: What do we know?

Alpo Kapuka et al.

Summary: Southern Africa's exceptional biodiversity is increasingly threatened by climate change and other pressures, but there is limited research on the risks to regional ecosystems and the quality of adaptation strategies. Studies have shown that climate change impacts vary across species, populations, and ecosystems, while management and policy responses still have room for improvement.

Maximum Entropy Modeling to Predict the Impact of Climate Change on Pine Wilt Disease in China

Xinggang Tang et al.

Summary: Pine wilt disease caused by the pinewood nematode is a devastating forest disease in China, with the southern area of the Yangtze River being the most severely affected. Climate change influences the distribution of pine trees and the spread of the nematode. In the future, the suitable habitat for the nematode is expected to increase, requiring appropriate measures to prevent its expansion.

Assessing the conservation of Miombo timber species through an integrated index of anthropogenic and climatic threats

Silvia Catarino et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the high rate of deforestation in Angolan Miombo woodlands, which are rich in Leguminosae timber species. The research presents an integrated index outlining the main threats to trees in order to support conservation efforts. By predicting the distribution areas of six Leguminosae timber species and analyzing the threat levels, the study found that a significant portion of Angola's area is under very high to moderate threat, highlighting the need for conservation measures to protect valuable species such as Brachystegia spiciformis and Isoberlinia angolensis. These findings can inform policymakers and aid in national conservation planning in Angola, while also providing a methodological approach that can be applied in other tropical regions with limited data.

Fine-scale variation in projected climate change presents opportunities for biodiversity conservation in Europe

Tomas Hlasny et al.

Summary: Climate change poses a significant threat to global biodiversity, with projections showing geographic and temporal variability in Europe. By using a multi-model ensemble of regional climate models, the study identifies regions of high and low climate stability in Europe throughout the 21st century. The results suggest that prioritizing areas with high future climate stability for biodiversity conservation can improve the effectiveness of conservation efforts under climate change.
