Fast start-up and reactivation of anammox process using polyurethane sponge

Zhenghua Peng et al.

Summary: Anammox is an efficient nitrogen removal technique, but its long start-up time limits industrial application, therefore the use of carriers to accelerate start-ups is essential. Preservation of anammox bacteria is crucial, and adding polyurethane sponge can shorten the start-up and reactivation time by retaining more anammox bacteria in the reactor.

Analyzing the effect of storage conditions on anammox recovery performance from the perspectives of time, temperature and biomass form

XiaoTong Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of storage conditions on anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox) process and identified the process mechanism. The results showed that storage time had a stronger influence on anammox properties than storage temperature and biomass form. Immobilized filler stored at 15 degrees C showed better recovery activity for anammox. Intermittent substrate supplementation weakened the adverse effect of long-term storage on anammox activity.

Summary: The study found that adding corn stover-derived biochars with different particle sizes (SP, MP, LP) can significantly improve the nitrogen removal efficiency of anammox reactors and reduce the concentration of NO3- in the effluent. The particle size of biochar affects its ability to enhance EPS electron transport, with SP biochar outperforming LP biochar in promoting the growth of anammox bacteria.

The effects of Fe(III) and Fe(II) on anammox process and the Fe-N metabolism

Yao Chen et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of different Fe stress on anammox process, finding that high Fe(II) concentrations may lead to precipitate formation while continuous addition of 30 mg/L-Fe(III) can damage EPS composition. Moreover, addition of Fe(II) could induce nitrate reduction, and OM27_clade and norank_f__Burkholderiaceae may play important roles in this process.

Hydroxylamine and the nitrogen cycle: A review

Aina Soler-Jofra et al.

Summary: Aerobic ammonium oxidizing bacteria have been identified more than 100 years ago, with hydroxylamine being known as an intermediate. Recent enzymatic evidence suggests that hydroxylamine is converted to NO and further to nitrite by an unknown enzyme. The nitrogen losses in the form of NO and N2O from three types of aerobic ammonium oxidizing microorganisms, as well as the inhibitory role of hydroxylamine on nitrite oxidizing bacteria, are still under investigation.

Rapid enrichment of anammox bacteria linked to floc aggregates in a single-stage partial nitritation-anammox process: Providing the initial carrier and anaerobic microenvironment

Jialin Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of floc aggregates in the enrichment of anaerobic ammonia oxidation bacteria (AnAOB) in a partial nitritation-anammox bioreactor. The addition of excess sodium acetate induced the formation of small floc aggregates, providing an initial biological carrier and necessary anaerobic microenvironment for the growth of attached AnAOB. These results suggest that floc aggregates play a crucial role in the enrichment of AnAOB and can be influenced by operational conditions.
