Effect of rainfall-induced diabatic heating over southern China on the formation of wintertime haze on the North China Plain

Xiadong An et al.

Summary: During the winters between 1985 and 2015, the North China Plain experienced heavy haze episodes that coincided with extreme rainfall in southern China. This study uses observations and model simulations to show that anomalous anticyclonic circulation, caused by Rossby wave trains, together with the north-south circulation system, plays a key role in modulating the haze over the North China Plain. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of diabatic heating related to precipitation in driving the north-south circulation system and the formation of haze.

Mapping anthropogenic emissions in China at 1 km spatial resolution and its application in air quality modeling

Bo Zheng et al.

Summary: New challenges are emerging in fine-scale air quality modeling in China due to a lack of high-resolution emission maps. A new accurate high-resolution emission mapping approach reduces the modeled biases of air pollutant concentrations in densely populated areas, thus improving the assessment of population exposure.

Pollution patterns and their meteorological analysis all over China

Lihua Zhou et al.

Summary: This study classified the distribution types of PM2.5 and O-3 pollution in China and analyzed the corresponding weather characteristics. It found that high PM2.5 levels were associated with high RH, T, low P, and low W, while high O-3 levels were associated with dry environments and higher temperatures. The results also showed specific correlations between pollutant concentrations and atmospheric conditions in different regions, providing insights for predicting pollution levels.

Impacts of LULC, FDDA, Topo-wind and UCM schemes on WRF-CMAQ over the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, China

Kun Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impacts of LULC change, FDDA, Topo-wind, and UCM schemes on meteorology and air quality, with UCM improving simulation of T2 and RH compared to LULC change, and Topo-wind scheme slowing down surface wind speed, especially at night. FDDA scheme significantly affected surface and aloft wind speed, with better simulation results for O-3 than other schemes, and the combination of all four schemes showed the best simulation performance for surface wind speed, pressure, SO2 and PM2.5 among scenarios, especially for stations with severe air pollution.

Uncertainty of land surface model and land use data on WRF model simulations over China

Yan Yan et al.

Summary: The study investigated the uncertainties in WRF simulated climatology over China caused by land surface models (LSMs) and land use (LU) data, finding that the impact of LSM and LU data varies significantly by region, with LSM having a substantially higher effect on precipitation than LU data. The study also revealed that the importance of LSMs and LU data in WRF climate modeling depends largely on the specific LSM used.

Summary: The study introduces a new objective two-step identification scheme to accurately identify wintertime cold fronts in Eurasia. By combining traditional thermal front parameters with temperature advection, the method can more reasonably determine the position of cold fronts, and it also produces good results when applied to cold wave events in China.

Numerical modeling of regional transport of PM2.5 during a severe pollution event in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region in November 2015

Weihang Zhang et al.

Summary: Regional transport from the south of the BTH region, induced by synoptic forcing and topographic effects, contributed up to 70% of the PM2.5 concentration during a severe pollution event in the BTH region. In addition to local emission-reduction strategies, multi-provincial cooperative efforts will be necessary to improve air quality in the BTH region.

Insights into particulate matter pollution in the North China Plain during wintertime: local contribution or regional transport?

Jiarui Wu et al.

Summary: Accurate identification and quantitative source apportionment of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is essential to reduce pollution. The study in North China Plain found that during a haze event, local emissions contributed 36.3% of PM2.5 mass in Beijing, while nonlocal emissions contributed 63.7%. Nonlocal emissions have a greater impact on PM2.5 levels in Beijing and Tianjin, while local emissions play a larger role in Hebei and Shandong.
