The structure and assembly mechanisms of plastisphere microbial community in natural marine environment

Sheng-Jie Zhang et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that microbial colonization profiles on microplastics in marine environments have higher diversity and evenness compared to seawater, influenced by environmental factors, polymer types, and exposure duration. Exposure to microplastics increases xenobiotic biodegradation potential and reduces microbial network complexity. Stochastic processes play a greater role than deterministic processes in shaping plastisphere microbial community structure.

Biofilm on microplastics in aqueous environment: Physicochemical properties and environmental implications

Siying He et al.

Summary: Microplastics, widely present in the environment, can attract biofilms which enhance their environmental risks and eco-toxicity. These biofilms alter the transport and deposition of microplastics, increase their ability to accumulate pollutants, and enrich harmful microorganisms. Further research is needed to better understand the impact of biofilms on microplastics.

Microplastics act as vectors for antibiotic resistance genes in landfill leachate: The enhanced roles of the long-term aging process

Yinglong Su et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the aging process significantly altered the surface properties of MPs, increasing specific surface areas, forming oxygen-containing groups, and changing surface morphology, which further enhanced microbial colonization. The bacterial community on MPs showed higher biofilm-forming and pathogenic potential compared to leachate. Results also indicated selective enrichment of ARGs on MPs, with an enhancement in enrichment potential during the aging process. Co-occurrence networks suggested the presence of non-random, closer, and more stable ARGs-bacterial taxa relations on MP surface, influencing ARG transmission.

Microplastic pollution in water, sediment, and specific tissues of crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) within two different breeding modes in Jianli, Hubei province, China

Dongdong Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the occurrence and distribution of microplastics in water, sediment, and crayfish samples in pond and rice-crayfish co-culture breeding modes in Jianli prefecture, China. The results indicate that microplastics can accumulate in the internal tissues of crayfish, with higher accumulation in the stomachs and guts compared to the gills, particularly in non-cleansed samples. Despite higher microplastic abundances in pond breeding mode samples, there were no significant differences in microplastic abundances between the two breeding modes.

Field to laboratory comparison of metal accumulation on aged microplastics in coastal waters

Minwei Xie et al.

Summary: Research has shown that aged microplastics in the environment accumulate metals, with a different behavior compared to metals adsorbed on new plastics in laboratory settings. This highlights the complexity of metal accumulation behavior in the real environment and suggests caution when translating laboratory findings to risk assessment of metal contaminated microplastics.

A biophysical limit for quorum sensing in biofilms

Avaneesh V. Narla et al.

Summary: Bacteria form complex immobile communities called biofilms, where they interact and compete via quorum sensing (QS) by producing and detecting small molecules called autoinducers (AIs). A study explored the competitive advantage of QS in biofilms and found that the effectiveness of QS strategies is influenced by nutrient availability and the dynamic range of AI concentrations in biofilms is limited by biophysical constraints.

Review of the artificially-accelerated aging technology and ecological risk of microplastics

Peng Liu et al.

Summary: Laboratory technologies can artificially control aging conditions and save labor and time costs, but they cannot fully simulate the complex aging processes in the environment. The potential impacts of aging process on the risks of MPs are seemingly enhanced, including physical injury, combined toxicity with external pollutants, and chemical risk of additives and low-molecular products.

Summary: The study highlights that the microbial biofilms associated with MPs in rivers are influenced by seasonal, geographical, and environmental factors, leading to variations in the structure and composition of microbial communities on MPs at different seasons and locations. The microbial diversity of MP-associated biofilm communities is also affected by seasonal changes.
