A novel strategy for improving volatile fatty acid purity, phosphorus removal efficiency, and fermented sludge dewaterability during waste activated sludge fermentation

Yun Chen et al.

Summary: A novel strategy of initiating fermentation at a pH of 10 was developed to improve VFA purity, P removal efficiency, and fermented sludge dewaterability during WAS fermentation. Despite lower VFAs concentration in RIA compared to RDC, the purity of VFAs in the fermented liquid was improved, TP release was lower, and dewaterability of fermented sludge was enhanced. The amount of alkali needed was significantly reduced in RIA, leading to cost savings in operational costs for each ton of TS processed.

Enhancement of sludge dewaterability via the thermal hydrolysis anaerobic digestion mechanism based on moisture and organic matter interactions

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: The thermal hydrolysis and anaerobic digestion process improves sludge dewaterability by increasing capillary suction time values and free moisture content, converting organic matter into dissolved form. The interaction between moisture and organic matter declines, leading to enhanced sludge dewaterability.

Characterization and modelling of soluble microbial products in activated sludge systems treating municipal wastewater with special emphasis on temperature effect

Chen Tao et al.

Summary: This study combines bioprocess modeling and advanced SMP characterization to reveal the association between biological processes and SMP formation in treating real wastewaters. The impact of low operating temperatures on SMP production was studied in detail, showing that the generation of BAP is more temperature sensitive. This process modeling can be used to optimize membrane processes design and operation under challenging conditions like low temperature.
