Microplastics do not increase bioaccumulation of petroleum hydrocarbons in Arctic zooplankton but trigger feeding suppression under co-exposure conditions

R. Almeda et al.

Summary: The study revealed that Arctic sea ice has high concentrations of microplastics, and the reduction of sea ice in the Arctic opens up new opportunities for the oil and maritime industries, increasing the risk of oil pollution in the region. Copods exposed to microplastics and crude oil may exhibit behavioral stress responses, such as feeding suppression.

Organophosphate Esters in the Canadian Arctic Ocean

Roxana Suehring et al.

Summary: Eleven organophosphate esters (OPEs) were detected in surface water and sediment samples from yearly sampling in the Canadian Arctic. Chlorinated OPEs (Cl-OPEs) had higher concentrations in water samples compared to non-chlorinated OPEs, while concentrations in sediment samples were relatively similar. Samples from the Mackenzie River plume indicated riverine discharge as a source of OPEs in the Canadian Arctic.

Legacy and emerging per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs) in sediment and edible fish from the Eastern Red Sea

Aasim M. Ali et al.

Summary: Poly- and perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs) were detected in sediment and edible fish from the Saudi Arabian Red Sea, with wastewater treatment plant effluents being the main source. PFOS was the most abundant compound, and PFAS levels and patterns varied between fish tissues. The dietary intake of certain PFASs in fish from Jeddah exceeded safety thresholds, posing a potential health risk to humans.

Spatial and Temporal Trends of Perfluoroalkyl Substances in Global Ocean and Coastal Waters

Derek Muir et al.

Summary: PFAS, specifically PFCAs and PFSAs, have been widely detected in global surface waters since the early 2000s. The majority of measurements come from coastal seas in Western Europe, China, Korea, and Japan, with highest median concentrations reported in China's Bohai and Yellow Seas region as well as Europe's North and Baltic seas. Significant declines in median PFSAs and C7-C12 PFCAs were observed in the period 2012-2018 in these regions, and for 2004-2017 in the Great Lakes. Mass discharge estimates indicate continued substantial riverine emissions of long chain PFCAs in the coastal seas of China and reductions in emissions for Western European rivers compared to earlier time periods.

PCBs, HCB and PAHs in the seawater of Arctic fjords - Distribution, sources and risk assessment

Anna Pouch et al.

Summary: This study examined contamination levels of PCBs, HCB, and PAHs in Arctic fjords, and found that the concentrations of contaminants in seawater depend on the physicochemical properties of the compounds, local human activities, and occurrence of glacier meltwaters. While most seawater samples had harmless levels of HCB and PAHs, some suspended particulate matter samples showed toxic levels of these compounds.

Net volatilization of PAHs from the North Pacific to the Arctic Ocean observed by passive sampling

Haowen Zheng et al.

Summary: The study conducted in the North Pacific-Arctic Oceans in 2014 sampled polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the atmosphere and seawater, finding that gaseous PAH concentrations were dominated by phenanthrene and fluorene, with correlations to latitude, partial pressure, and temperature. PAH concentrations in seawater showed regional characteristics, with higher levels near East Asia and lower values in the Bering Strait. The data suggested net volatilization of PAHs from seawater into the air, emphasizing the importance of air-sea exchange in open marine environments.

Summary: The study showed that Antarctic marine predators, such as the south polar skua, are exposed to organohalogen contaminants and had higher levels of pollutants in 2013/2014 compared to 2001/2002. Male south polar skuas in 2013/2014 were in poorer body condition than in 2001/2002, which may be related to the higher pollutant levels.

The new emerging compound 6:2 Cl-PFESA was found in higher concentrations near Australia. Different regions showed different sources of PFASs, with the Southern Ocean primarily influenced by atmospheric input and the Northwest Pacific Ocean and Eastern Indian Ocean mainly originating from land sources.
