Determination of total oxidizable precursors in foam surfactants and foam contaminated water based on UV-activated persulfate oxidation

Xueqi Fan et al.

Summary: A new UV-activated persulfate method was developed as a faster alternative to the traditional heat-based TOP assay to convert PFASs precursors into detectable PFAAs. The UV-based TOP assay showed nearly complete conversion of FTS and FOSA within 60 minutes, with comparable results to the heat-based assay in industry samples. The UV-based TOP assay is efficient, reliable and faster than the conventional heat-based method.

Dominant entropic binding of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) to albumin protein revealed by 19F NMR

Michael Fedorenko et al.

Summary: Understanding protein binding mechanisms of PFASs is crucial for predicting their distribution in the body. F-19 NMR spectroscopy revealed that hydrophobic tails of PFASs have greater affinity for proteins than headgroups. The binding mechanism is dominated by entropic hydrophobic interactions and solvent entropy plays a significant role.

Target, Nontarget, and Suspect Screening and Temporal Trends of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in Marine Mammals from the South China Sea

Qi Wang et al.

Summary: The study conducted target, nontarget, and suspect screening of PFASs in the liver of Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins and finless porpoises stranded in the South China Sea between 2012 and 2018. Perfluorooctane sulfonate and 6:2 Cl-PFESA were the predominant PFASs found, with significantly higher concentrations in dolphin liver samples than porpoise liver samples. Temporal trends indicated increasing pollution by emerging PFASs, and a risk assessment highlighted potential reproductive injury from the emerging PFAS 6:2 Cl-PFESA in cetaceans.

Summary: The study investigated the hydrothermal alkaline treatment of PFASs in AFFFs, demonstrating rapid degradation of most PFASs, including per- and polyfluoroalkyl acids and precursors, when treated with an alkali at near-critical temperature and pressure. The findings suggest significant potential for the application of hydrothermal treatment technologies in managing PFAS waste streams.

Legacy and emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in Australian biosolids

Damien Moodie et al.

Summary: Biosolids samples from 19 Australian WWTPs were analyzed for 44 PFAS, with di-substituted phosphate esters being the dominant compound class contributing 45% of total PFAS mass. Higher PFAS concentrations were observed in urban locations, and there was a weak correlation between PFAS mass and percentage industrial waste contribution in WWTPs.

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) in Breast Milk: Concerning Trends for Current-Use PFAS

Guomao Zheng et al.

Summary: This study found that a variety of PFAS are present in breast milk from mothers in the United States, including both legacy and current-use compounds, potentially exposing nursing infants. Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid and perfluorooctanoic acid were the most common PFAS in the samples, while the detection frequency and concentration of short-chain PFAS are increasing.

Extractable Organofluorine Analysis in Pooled Human Serum and Placental Tissue Samples from an Austrian Subpopulation-A Mass Balance Analysis Approach

Andreas-Marius Kaiser et al.

Summary: The vulnerability of embryos and fetuses to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is a major concern. This investigation found that human exposure to PFAS may be underestimated, and identified unknown PFAS in maternal serum, placental tissue, and cord serum samples. Additionally, higher levels of unidentified PFAS were observed in placental tissue, indicating potential accumulation or transformation of precursors in the placenta.

Interpretation of Reductive PFAS Defluorination with Quantum Chemical Parameters

Zhiwen Cheng et al.

Summary: In this study, advanced reduction using hydrated electrons was found to be a promising technology for degrading PFAS. The relationships between quantum chemical parameters and overall defluorination ratio of multiple PFAS structural categories were investigated using QSAR models, identifying influencing factors such as Fukui index and energy of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital. The optimal QSAR model showed good accuracy and reliability in predicting the overall deF% and gaining insights into the mechanism of reductive defluorination.
