Long-term fate of rapidly eroding carbon stock soil profiles in coastal wetlands

Yadav Sapkota et al.

Summary: The study found that in highly eroding marsh areas, the carbon density in the soil increased with depth, highlighting the need to consider deeper layers for blue carbon stock assessment. At the estuarine bottom, the age of the carbon was 388 +/- 84 years BP, indicating that recently eroded wetland carbon is not reburied in the estuary.

Investigating the impact of in situ soil organic matter degradation through porewater spectroscopic analyses on marsh edge erosion

Michael P. Hayes et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of in situ biogeochemical degradations of SOM on marsh edge erosion using porewater spectroscopic analyses. Findings indicated that SOM degradation alone did not directly correlate to edge erosion, suggesting the complex nature of the drivers behind marsh edge erosion.

Global patterns of nitrate isotope composition in rivers and adjacent aquifers reveal reactive nitrogen cascading

Ioannis Matiatos et al.

Summary: The isotopic data of nitrate in global rivers and shallow aquifers reveal differences in nitrate concentrations and nitrogen isotope composition between the two water bodies. Water temperature plays a role in affecting the isotopic composition of nitrate, with waste-related nitrogen source signals being more prominent in colder seasons. Isotopic assays are crucial for understanding nitrate pollution and informing effective agricultural and land management strategies.
