Insights into naphthalene degradation in aqueous solution and soil slurry medium: Performance and mechanisms

Guilu Zeng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the degradation performance of naphthalene (NAP) in aqueous solution and soil slurry medium using nano zero valent iron (nZVI) combined with citric acid (CA) activation in peroxodisulfate (PDS) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) oxidation systems. The results showed that NAP could be degraded by 98.1% and 98.9% in the PDS/nZVI/CA and PMS/nZVI/CA systems within 2 hours. In addition, the presence of CA promoted the dissolution of soil minerals and the desorption of NAP from soil medium. The existence of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in soil facilitated the Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycle and electron transfer during NAP degradation.

Fabrication of sand-based novel adsorbents embedded with biochar or binding agents via calcite precipitation for sulfathiazole scavenging

Abdullah Almajed et al.

Summary: Efficient and low-cost adsorbents for sulfathiazole removal were fabricated through enzyme induced carbonate precipitation (EICP) of sand embedded with binding agents. Enrichment with binding agents improved the performance of the adsorbents, with biochar enrichment showing the highest removal efficiency for sulfathiazole. The adsorption mechanisms were mainly attributed to pi-pi electron-donor-acceptor interactions, assisted by electrostatic interactions and H-bonding.

Degradation of organic contaminants in marine sediments by peroxymonosulfate over LaFeO3 nanoparticles supported on water caltrop shell-derived biochar and the associated microbial community responses

Chang-Mao Hung et al.

Summary: The LFBC/PMS process enhances the biological richness and diversity of sediment ecosystems, leading to changes in the bacterial community. Under optimal conditions, LFBC/PMS treatment can degrade 90% of total PAHs in 24 hours, with degradation efficiency for 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-, and 6-ring PAHs at 52%, 61%, 66%, 56%, and 29% respectively. The Langmuir-Hinshelwood equation successfully predicts the PAHs degradation kinetics over LFBC by PMS.
