Effect of ferrous iron loading on dewaterability, heavy metal removal and bacterial community of digested sludge by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans

Guiqin Cai et al.

Summary: Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans ILS-2 was utilized to improve dewaterability of digested sludge, with increasing ferrous iron loading enhancing sludge dewaterability. While bioleaching treatment had little effect on dewaterability, it significantly improved heavy metal removal, especially at high iron loadings. Sequencing of 16S rRNA genes revealed changes in bacterial communities after treatment with different iron loadings.

Demetallization of Sewage Sludge Using Low-Cost Ionic Liquids

Joseph G. Yao et al.

Summary: This study focused on utilizing low-cost ionic liquids for complexing toxic metals in sewage sludge, showing promising results in efficiently separating metal contaminants. Specifically, [Hmim]Cl exhibited a high extraction rate for Cd-II, Ni-II, Zn-II, and Pb-II, while [TEA][HSO4] was more effective in removing Cr-III, Cr-VI, and As-III. Recycling [Hmim]Cl and exploring the use of electrochemical deposition for preventing metal buildup in the IL were also discussed, offering new possibilities for sewage sludge valorization.

Removal behavior and chemical speciation distributions of heavy metals in sewage sludge during bioleaching and combined bioleaching/Fenton-like processes

Chunsheng Qiu et al.

Summary: This study compared the removal and chemical speciation changes of heavy metals in sewage sludge during single bioleaching and combined bioleaching/Fenton-like processes. The Fenton-like treatment was found to further improve the solubilization efficiencies of heavy metals in mobile forms, while impacting the removal efficiencies of As and Pb. The dewaterability of the treated sludge was significantly improved after the processes.

Evaluating the Role of Water as a Cosolvent and an Antisolvent in [HSO4]-Based Protic Ionic Liquid Pretreatment

Aida R. Abouelela et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing the water concentration as a cosolvent can reduce the amount of ionic liquid used in biomass fractionation, achieving effective deconstruction for certain biomass types. However, softwood biomass showed higher resistance to fractionation at higher water concentrations. Additionally, reducing the amount of water used as an antisolvent can impact lignin precipitation yields and properties.

Technoeconomic Assessment of a Biomass Pretreatment plus Ionic Liquid Recovery Process with Aprotic and Choline Derived Ionic Liquids

Antonio Ovejero-Perez et al.

Summary: This study offers a technoeconomical analysis of the IL recovery step in a real biorefinery pretreatment process by analyzing the influence of washing water volumes on enzymatic hydrolysis and IL recovery costs. The results showed that incremental volumes of water led to higher operating costs in the IL recovery step, which can be compensated with less IL makeup costs.
