Advancing 2D Perovskites for Efficient and Stable Solar Cells: Challenges and Opportunities

Xiaoming Zhao et al.

Summary: Perovskite solar cells have shown great potential for high efficiency and low cost production, but they face tradeoffs between efficiency and stability. 2D perovskites offer better stability compared to 3D perovskites, but with lower efficiency; while 2D/3D perovskites show higher efficiency but relatively poor stability.

Metastable Dion-Jacobson 2D structure enables efficient and stable perovskite solar cells

Fei Zhang et al.

Summary: The performance of 3D perovskite solar cells can be improved by treating the surface with 2D layered perovskites that have efficient charge transport. Adjusting the arrangement of organic molecules enhances hole transport and power conversion efficiency. The use of a stable 2D surface layer also improves the performance and stability of 3D perovskite solar cells.

Direct Surface Passivation of Perovskite Film by 4-Fluorophenethylammonium Iodide toward Stable and Efficient Perovskite Solar Cells

Xiongzhuo Jiang et al.

Summary: Passivating the perovskite layer with organic halide salts directly can reduce film defects and enhance charge transport efficiency, leading to improved device performance and stability. The strategy effectively suppresses nonradiative recombination and reduces recombination losses, resulting in higher device efficiency and good ambient stability.

Organic Hole Transport Material Ionization Potential Dictates Diffusion Kinetics of Iodine Species in Halide Perovskite Devices

Ross A. Kerner et al.

Summary: Iodine-containing volatiles are major degradation products of halide perovskite materials under irradiation. The study examines the diffusion kinetics of iodine into organic hole transport materials (HTMs) and reactions, finding a correlation between I-2 permeability and HTM ionization energy. This suggests that HTM energetics influence the stability of halide perovskite devices by suppressing iodine migration.

Surface Engineering of Ambient-Air-Processed Cesium Lead Triiodide Layers for Efficient Solar Cells

So Me Yoon et al.

Summary: Cesium lead triiodide (CsPbI3) has a desirable band gap and high thermal stability, but its power conversion efficiency (PCE) is lower than that of organic cation-based halide perovskites with identical band gaps. The PCE of CsPbI3 solar cells is mainly governed by the surface morphology and defect passivation of its thin films.

Perovskite solar cells with atomically coherent interlayers on SnO2 electrodes

Hanul Min et al.

Summary: By introducing an interlayer between the electron-transporting and perovskite layers in perovskite solar cells, researchers have successfully enhanced charge extraction and transport from the perovskite, leading to higher power conversion efficiency and fewer interfacial defects. The coherent interlayer allowed the fabrication of devices with a certified efficiency of 25.5%, which maintained about 90% of its initial efficiency even after continuous light exposure for 500 hours. The findings provide guidelines for designing defect-minimizing interfaces in metal halide perovskites and electron-transporting layers.

Interfacial toughening with self-assembled monolayers enhances perovskite solar cell reliability

Zhenghong Dai et al.

Summary: The use of iodine-terminated self-assembled monolayer (I-SAM) in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) leads to increased adhesion toughness at the interface, improved power conversion efficiency, reduced hysteresis, and enhanced operational stability. This is attributed to a decrease in hydroxyl groups at the interface and higher interfacial toughness achieved with I-SAM treatment.
