Effect of capillary pressure gradient in microporous layer on proton exchange membrane fuel cell performance

Jaebong Sim et al.

Summary: The water discharge capability of the gas diffusion layer (GDL) in a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is significantly influenced by the capillary pressure gradient. This study explores three different methods of manufacturing the microporous layer (MPL) to enhance the capillary pressure gradient and improve the water discharge capability of the GDL. Varying the thickness of the MPL, adding hydrophilic carbon black particles, and adjusting the number of MPL loadings with different viscosities are all found to have a notable effect on the performance of the GDL.

Effects of ratio variation in substrate and micro porous layer penetration on polymer exchange membrane fuel cell performance

Jaebong Sim et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of ratio variation in the substrate and MPL penetration region on PEMFC performance, finding the optimal ratios for MPL penetration and overall performance. An excessively low substrate ratio can lead to water flooding and hinder gas supply.

Effects of basic gas diffusion layer components on PEMFC performance with capillary pressure gradient

Jaebong Sim et al.

Summary: The design of the gas diffusion layer (GDL) plays a crucial role in the performance of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC), especially in terms of water discharge and capillary pressure gradient. By adjusting different element contents in GDL, the performance of PEMFC can be significantly affected, with differences observed under various conditions.

Optimizing the Mass-Transfer Efficiency of a Microporous Layer for High-Performance Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

Liang Chen et al.

Summary: The use of carbon-based gel to create micron-scale ordered indentations on the microporous layer surface in fuel cells enhances mass transfer efficiency and water management, ultimately improving performance. The gel's high viscosity prevents slurry intrusion into pores, creating more space for rapid mass transfer in the gas diffusion layer.
