Modeling hydrogen-rock-brine interactions for the Jurassic reservoir and cap rocks from Polish Lowlands

Krzysztof Labus et al.

Summary: This study presents the geochemical modeling results of hydrogen-rock-brine interactions for different types of rocks from the Polish Lowland. Goethite is identified as the main component responsible for the consumption of stored hydrogen. The changes in rock porosity are found to be smaller in sandstones compared to mudstones and claystones. The findings provide insights into the behavior of hydrogen in underground storage conditions.

Role of Cushion Gas on Underground Hydrogen Storage in Depleted Oil Reservoirs

Mahdi Kanaani et al.

Summary: Hydrogen storage in underground structures is a vital way to maintain the balance between energy production and consumption, with the potential to convert excess electrical energy into chemical energy for temporary storage. The study found that using methane as cushion gas could achieve a maximum hydrogen recovery rate of 89.7%, while absence of cushion gas led to a higher hydrogen loss.

Assessment of the potential for underground hydrogen storage in salt domes

Leszek Lankof et al.

Summary: This study addresses the critical issue of large-scale hydrogen storage in salt domes and presents a methodology for assessing the storage potential. The method takes into account the size, depth, convergence, and geological structure of the salt domes. Statistical analysis of data from an underground cavern storage facility allows determining the probability of constructing specific volumes and depths of salt caverns in the selected domes. The study finds that the hydrogen storage potential of the analyzed salt domes decreases over time.

A review on underground hydrogen storage: Insight into geological sites, influencing factors and future outlook

Nasiru Salahu Muhammed et al.

Summary: This article investigates the potential of underground hydrogen storage as a large-scale energy storage solution. The review examines both conventional and unconventional underground hydrogen storage options and highlights potential storage sites and selection criteria. The hydrodynamics factors influencing underground hydrogen storage, including solid, fluid, and solid-fluid interactions, are summarized. The study also explores the economics and reaction aspects of underground hydrogen storage. The findings indicate that underground hydrogen storage, like other storage systems, is still in its early stages and requires further research and development to address significant challenges and research gaps.

Impact of Chemical Environment on Compaction Behaviour of Quartz Sands during Stress-Cycling

M. T. W. Schimmel et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of pore fluid chemistry on short-term compaction of quartz sand aggregates through uniaxial stress-cycling experiments. The results showed that different fluid environments can influence compaction, with fluid-saturated samples producing more compaction than dry samples in the first loading-unloading stress-cycle. However, with prolonged stress-cycling, the fluid-enhanced compaction effects disappeared as crack growth rates reduced.
