Accuracy of the ultrasound attenuation coefficient for the evaluation of hepatic steatosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective studies

Jong Keon Jang et al.

Summary: Accurate detection and quantification of hepatic steatosis are crucial for managing nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. In this study, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the accuracy of ultrasound-measured attenuation coefficient (AC) in evaluating hepatic steatosis. The results showed that AC has good diagnostic performance for assessing hepatic steatosis. However, the interpretation of results should take into account factors such as body mass index (BMI) and the prevalence of steatosis or significant fibrosis.

Accuracy of Two-Dimensional Shear Wave Elastography and Attenuation Imaging for Evaluation of Patients With Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis

Dong Ho Lee et al.

Summary: In this study, a multiparametric approach using attenuation imaging and 2D-SWE was evaluated for the detection of steatosis and fibrosis in NAFLD patients. The attenuation coefficient was associated with steatosis grade, liver stiffness with fibrosis stage, and SWDS with lobular inflammation. A risk scoring system based on these parameters showed high accuracy in identifying patients with steatohepatitis.

Summary: This study compared the efficacy and accuracy of MRI and TE for assessing hepatic steatosis in NAFLD patients. The results showed that both MRI-PDFF and TE-CAP are highly accurate noninvasive methods for quantifying and staging hepatic steatosis in NAFLD. MRI-PDFF is significantly more accurate than TE-CAP for evaluating dichotomized grades of steatosis.

Assessment of hepatic steatosis by controlled attenuation parameter using the M and XL probes: an individual patient data meta-analysis

David Petroff et al.

Summary: This study conducted an individual patient data meta-analysis to evaluate the diagnostic properties of hepatic steatosis using CAP. Results showed that optimal cutoffs for CAP varied according to different etiologies of liver disease. While CAP may not adequately grade steatosis in patients with NAFLD, it can effectively identify significant steatosis in patients with viral hepatitis.
