Fibronodular hepatocellular carcinoma-a new variant of liver cancer: clinical, pathological and radiological correlation

Jonathan Tefera et al.

Summary: The study establishes and defines a new HCC variant, FN-HCC, which is more likely to occur in non-advanced fibrotic livers, has higher rates of surgical resection and longer time to progression. FN-HCC shows distinct radiological features compared to conventional HCC and SC-HCC.

Steatohepatitic hepatocellular carcinoma: imaging findings with clinicopathological correlation

S. Inui et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the clinicopathological and radiological features of steatohepatitic hepatocellular carcinoma (SH-HCC). Findings showed common clinical features in SH-HCC patients, including obesity, hypertension, and history of heavy alcohol intake. SH-HCC typically presents with prominent fatty deposits and arterial phase enhancement on CT and MRI.

Gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI of macrotrabecular-massive hepatocellular carcinoma and its prognostic implications

Hyungjin Rhee et al.

Summary: This study aimed to characterize MTM-HCC on gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI and evaluate the diagnostic accuracy and prognostic value of these imaging characteristics. Two diagnostic criteria were developed for MTM-HCC based on MRI findings which showed good sensitivity and specificity, and were associated with poor outcomes after hepatic resection.

Hepatocellular adenomas: review of pathological and molecular features

Aurelie Beaufrere et al.

Summary: Hepatocellular adenoma (HCA) is a rare benign liver neoplasm that mainly occurs in women of reproductive age who take oral contraceptives. HCA can be classified into 5 subtypes based on genotype-phenotype characteristics, with the main complications being bleeding and malignant transformation. Management requires a multidisciplinary approach considering gender, tumor size, and HCA subtyping.

Hepatocellular carcinoma

Josep M. Llovet et al.

Summary: Liver cancer, particularly hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), poses a significant global health challenge with rising incidence projected to exceed 1 million cases by 2025. Infection by hepatitis B and C viruses remains a major risk factor for HCC, while non-alcoholic steatohepatitis is emerging as a more common risk factor in Western countries. Advances in systemic therapies for HCC, including immunotherapies and targeted therapies, are expected to revolutionize the management of this disease.

Spectrum of liver lesions hyperintense on hepatobiliary phase: an approach by clinical setting

Federica Vernuccio et al.

Summary: Hepatobiliary MRI contrast agents are increasingly used for liver imaging, but most focal liver lesions do not uptake these agents. This pictorial review covers a broad spectrum of benign and malignant focal hepatic observations that may show hyperintensity on hepatobiliary phase in various clinical settings. In certain cases, such as in patients with primary or secondary vascular disorders, lesions may appear hyperintense in the hepatobiliary phase due to local hyperplastic responses to vascular alterations.

Recurrent Hepatocellular Carcinoma After Liver Transplantation: Validation of a Pathologic Risk Score on Explanted Livers to Predict Recurrence

Salman Aziz et al.

Summary: The study validated a risk assessment tool based on pathologic scoring, which can effectively predict hepatocellular carcinoma recurrence after liver transplantation. Patients were stratified into different risk groups based on the risk score, with lower risk score associated with higher recurrence-free survival.

Higher Enhancement Intrahepatic Nodules on the Hepatobiliary Phase of Gd-EOB-DTPA-Enhanced MRI as a Poor Responsive Marker of Anti-PD-1/PD-L1 Monotherapy for Unresectable Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Tomoko Aoki et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the use of Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced MRI to predict the response of HCC nodules to ICIs. Patients with higher enhancement HCC nodules had shorter time to nodular progression and progression-free survival than those with hypo-enhancement, indicating a potential imaging biomarker for predicting response to anti-PD-1/PD-L1 monotherapy in HCC patients.

Cell of origin in biliary tract cancers and clinical implications

Agrin Moeini et al.

Summary: Biliary tract cancers (BTCs) are aggressive epithelial malignancies with rising incidence and mortality rates, emphasizing the need for improved diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. BTCs exhibit high inter- and intra-tumour heterogeneity at both morphological and molecular levels. Recent research has focused on histopathological subtyping and the cell of origin of these tumors, highlighting distinct molecular alterations and potential cells of origin.
