DNA strand break induction of aqueous plasmid DNA exposed to 30 MeV protons at ultra-high dose rate

Daisuke Ohsawa et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of ultra-high dose rate FLASH exposure on DNA strand break induction. By comparing the results of conventional dose rate and ultra-high dose rate exposure in plasmid DNA, it was found that FLASH exposure significantly reduced the induction of single strand breaks, but had no significant effect on double strand breaks.

Dose Rate Effects in Fluorescence Chemical Dosimeters Exposed to Picosecond Electron Pulses: An Accurate Measurement of Low Doses at High Dose Rates

Martin Precek et al.

Summary: This study investigated four different dosimetry systems for measuring low doses with a high-dose-rate source. The results showed that fluorescence chemical dosimeters offer higher sensitivity for measuring biologically relevant low doses, but their chemical yields were significantly reduced when irradiated with ultra-short pulses.

Ultra-High Dose Rate (FLASH) Carbon Ion Irradiation: Dosimetry and First Cell Experiments

Walter Tinganelli et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to establish a beam monitoring and dosimetry system for FLASH dose rate carbon ion irradiation and investigate the in vitro biological response at different oxygen concentrations. The results showed that using beam scanning, high dose rates could be achieved, and there was a significant dose sparing effect in hypoxia.

Ultra-high-dose-rate FLASH and Conventional-Dose-Rate Irradiation Differentially Affect Human Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and Normal Hematopoiesis

Sara Chabi et al.

Summary: Ultra-high-dose-rate FLASH radiation therapy has been shown to be more effective in controlling the propagation of two cases of T-ALL compared to conventional-dose-rate TBI. It was able to preserve stem cell potential and control tumor development when both HSPCs and T-ALL were present in the same animals.

Scaling parameter of the lethal effect of mammalian cells based on radiation-induced OH radicals: effectiveness of direct action in radiation therapy

Tamon Kusumoto et al.

Summary: A new criterion DABBLE is proposed to measure the contribution of direct action for cell killing induced by C ions, showing a monotonic increase with linear energy transfer up to 140 keV/mu m. By comparing survival curves, the difference between direct and indirect action can be discriminated. The trend of DABBLE correlates with the relative biological effectiveness of indirect action over time.

Quantitative estimation of track segment yields of water radiolysis species under heavy ions around Bragg peak energies using Geant4-DNA

Kentaro Baba et al.

Summary: In this study, the track segment yield G' of typical water radiolysis products under heavy ions was evaluated using a Monte Carlo simulation code in Geant4-DNA. Experimental results were successfully reproduced for (OH)-O-. of helium and carbon ions around the Bragg peak energies, but proper evaluation of G-values around the Bragg peak energies remains a challenge due to the dense continuous secondary products generated in this region. Additional simulation of radical-radical reactions involving secondary products formed by irradiation improved the agreement between simulation and experimental results around the Bragg peak. Further research on fragmentation and multi-ionization is needed for more realistic simulations.

Transient hypoxia in water irradiated by swift carbon ions at ultra-high dose rates: implication for FLASH carbon-ion therapy

Abdullah Muhammad Zakaria et al.

Summary: FLASH radiotherapy, delivering high doses of ionizing radiation at ultra-high dose rates, has shown promise in sparing normal tissues while preserving anti-tumor activity. Further research is needed to understand the efficacy of heavy ions like carbon ions under these conditions.

FLASH Dose Rate Helium Ion Beams: First In Vitro Investigations

Thomas Tessonnier et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the effects of dose, LET, and O-2 concentration on biologic response to ultrahigh dose rate helium ion beams. Results showed no significant differences in cellular response between ultrahigh dose rate and standard dose rate irradiation at different doses and oxygen levels, but a FLASH sparing effect was observed under specific conditions.
