Cyclic evolution of phytoplankton forced by changes in tropical seasonality

Luc Beaufort et al.

Summary: The study reveals that over the past 2.8 million years, Earth's orbital eccentricity has significantly influenced the morphological evolution of coccolithophores, leading them to adapt to different climate environments. Simulations suggest that changes in seasonal cycles directly impact the diversity of ecological niches in the ocean, affecting the morphology and carbonate export of coccolithophores.

Increased interglacial atmospheric CO2 levels followed the mid-Pleistocene Transition

Masanobu Yamamoto et al.

Summary: Atmospheric CO2 and polar ice volume have a strong coupling over the past 805,000 years. However, the extent of coupling during times of lower-amplitude ice-volume variability is unknown due to the lack of continuous high-resolution CO2 records. By utilizing the relationship between CO2 concentration and leaf-wax delta C-13 resulting from changes in vegetation in East India, we reconstructed the atmospheric CO2 for the past 1,460,000 years. The findings suggest that deep-ocean circulation controlled the long-term CO2 trend and the interaction between CO2, continental ice, and deep-ocean circulation was reorganized during the mid-Pleistocene Transition.

Antiphased dust deposition and productivity in the Antarctic Zone over 1.5 million years

Michael E. Weber et al.

Summary: The field of Southern Ocean paleoceanography is vital for understanding the development of iron fertilization and oceanic productivity during Pleistocene ice-ages and their impact on the carbon cycle. A high-resolution record of dust deposition and ocean productivity in the Antarctic Zone has revealed significant changes over the past 1.5 million years, with increased dust deposition during glacials and higher biogenic silica deposition during interglacials. The study also suggests more severe glaciations and changes in ocean productivity over the past 0.9 million years.

Enhanced Carbonate Counter Pump and upwelling strengths in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean during MIS 11

Margaux Brandon et al.

Summary: Southern Ocean dynamics play a crucial role in modulating the increase in atmospheric CO2 concentrations during deglaciations. This study focuses on the impact of the Biological Carbon Pump, specifically the Carbonate Counter Pump, in contributing to the increase in CO2 concentrations in oceanic surface waters and the atmosphere. The findings highlight the importance of deep-water ventilation in the Southern Ocean and the role of enhanced upwelling dynamics in the release of sequestered CO2 and the subsequent increase in atmospheric pCO2.

Enhanced E. huxleyi carbonate counterpump as a positive feedback to increase deglacial pCO2sw in the Eastern Equatorial Pacific

Chiara Balestrieri et al.

Summary: The modern Eastern Equatorial Pacific Ocean is a high nutrient low chlorophyll upwelling region that played a major role in the outgassing of carbon dioxide during the last deglaciation. The coccolith calcification degree of Emiliania huxleyi is increased during times of high pCO(2) and low surface water pH conditions. The study suggests an enhanced coccolithophore biological pump during the last glacial period that may have partially buffered the excess of atmospheric CO2.

Carbonate fluxes by coccolithophore species between NW Africa and the Caribbean: Implications for the biological carbon pump

Catarina Guerreiro et al.

Summary: Coccolithophores play a significant role in the biological carbon pump. Different species of coccolithophores at different sites show variations in coccolith-carbonate flux, influenced by environmental factors such as nutrient availability and temperature. The study suggests that changes in productivity in response to ocean warming may affect the efficiency of the biological carbon pump.

On the Cause of the Mid-Pleistocene Transition

C. J. Berends et al.

Summary: The Mid-Pleistocene Transition (MPT) remains one of the most intriguing unsolved issues in paleoclimatology, involving the shift from 41 to approximately 100 kyr glacial cycles. Various physical mechanisms have been proposed to explain the MPT, but significant gaps in understanding remain. Future model experiments focusing on quantitative differences between these mechanisms could help interpret observational evidence and potentially provide new insights into the MPT.

Technical note: A universal method for measuring the thickness of microscopic calcite crystals, based on bidirectional circular polarization

Luc Beaufort et al.

Summary: This study presents a new method for measuring crystal thickness that does not require calibration, is compatible with different cameras and microscopes, and does not need precise control of light intensity. The method uses bidirectional circular polarization and a simple equation to calculate thickness independently of calibration.
