The serotonin reuptake transporter modulates mitochondrial copy number and mitochondrial respiratory complex gene expression in the frontal cortex and cerebellum in a sexually dimorphic manner

Bryony N. Thorne et al.

Summary: This study investigates the pathophysiology of neuropsychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders and finds that reduced expression of the serotonin transporter affects mitochondrial biogenesis and ATP production in the brain. The sexual dimorphism in mitochondrial abundance and gene expression may contribute to the sex bias found in conditions such as major depressive disorder and autism spectrum disorder.

Sex differences in affective states and association with voluntary ethanol intake in Sprague-Dawley rats

S. G. Quadir et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between affective states and ethanol intake in male and female Sprague-Dawley rats. It found sex- and test-specific differences in baseline affective behavior, with females showing enhanced anxiety-like behavior and males displaying enhanced anxiety-like behavior. Depressive-like behavior predicted future ethanol intake in female rats only, while post-drinking anxiety-like behavior predicted subsequent ethanol intake in female rats. The research provides insight into the complex interaction between negative affect and ethanol intake in a sex-specific manner.

Paternal alcohol exposure reduces acquisition of operant alcohol self-administration and affects Bdnf DNA methylation in male and female offspring

Steven J. Nieto et al.

Summary: Familial transmission of alcohol use disorder involves genetic and environmental factors, with paternal alcohol exposure potentially affecting offspring sensitivity to alcohol via epigenetic modifications. Offspring from alcohol-exposed sires showed aberrant Bdnf DNA methylation patterns and self-administered less alcohol compared to control-sired offspring. The dysregulated Bdnf methylation pattern in reward-related circuitry did not directly mirror changes seen in sires.

Sex-related differences in pattern of ethanol drinking under the intermittent-access model and its impact on exploratory and anxiety-like behavior in Long-Evans rats

Breanne E. Pirino et al.

Summary: This study found that, under an ethanol drinking model, female rats overall had higher ethanol intake and preference than male rats. However, despite drinking more ethanol, female rats did not show significantly different blood ethanol concentration than male rats. In addition, a history of ethanol drinking had some effects on activity and anxiety behaviors in rats, but these effects were not dependent on gender.

Sex bias in the serotonin transporter knockout model: Implications for neuropsychiatric disorder research

Bryony N. Thorne et al.

Summary: Serotonergic signaling is important in neuropsychiatric disorders, with SERT playing a crucial role. Animal models have highlighted sex differences in SERT function and brain development, but there is a bias in representation of sexes.

Transient serotonin depletion at adolescence, but not at early infancy, reduced subsequent anxiety-like behavior and alcohol intake in female mice

Summary: The study shows that transient depletion of 5-HT during adolescence may act as a protective factor for the emergence of anxiety disorders and problematic use of alcohol in females.
