A Reasonable Officer: Examining the Relationships Among Stress, Training, and Performance in a Highly Realistic Lethal Force Scenario

Simon Baldwin et al.

Summary: Police officers' performance in life-or-death decision-making is influenced by their operational skills training, years of service, and stress reactivity. Results showed that the scenario caused elevated heart rates and perceptual-cognitive distortions, with an average performance rating of 59% and 27% of participants making at least one lethal force error. Higher stress reactivity predicted poorer performance and more lethal force errors. The effects of training and years of service on performance and lethal force errors were complex.
