Attempted suicide rates before and during the COVID-19 pandemic: interrupted time series analysis of a nationally representative sample

Yael Travis-Lumer et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the association between COVID-19 pandemic exposure and suicide attempt rates. The findings suggest that there is a negative association between the interval exposed to the COVID-19 pandemic and the risk of suicide attempts. However, the projections indicate that the suicide attempt rate may increase 10 months after lifting social mitigation policies.

Surging trends in prescriptions and costs of antidepressants in England amid COVID-19

Shahad A. Rabeea et al.

Summary: The study examined trends in prescriptions and costs of antidepressants in England during the COVID-19 pandemic, finding an increase in both. The SSRI antidepressant Sertraline alone accounted for an extra £113 million in costs in 2020 compared to 2019. Peak dispensing for antidepressants was observed in March 2020, while total costs peaked in April 2020. The rising prescription costs, especially in adolescents and younger adults, are a cause for concern due to the higher risk of life-threatening adverse drug reactions.

A Study of Older Adults' Mental Health across 33 Countries during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Carmen M. Tyler et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of personal characteristics and the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of older adults aged 60 and older from 33 countries. Findings show that being separated from and having conflicts with loved ones, as well as residing in a country with higher income, can impact anxiety and depression in older adults. Adjusting to working from home, younger age, and receiving medical treatment for severe COVID-19 symptoms are also factors associated with depression and anxiety. Older adults from Europe and Central Asia reported higher depression levels compared to those from other regions, while their anxiety levels were higher than those from Latin America and the Caribbean.

Understanding the psychiatric symptoms of COVID-19: a meta-analysis of studies assessing psychiatric symptoms in Chinese patients with and survivors of COVID-19 and SARS by using the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised

Qin Xie et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis examined the psychiatric symptoms of COVID-19 and SARS patients and survivors using the SCL-90-R instrument. The study found that acute COVID-19 patients exhibited severe psychiatric symptoms that persisted into the very early recovery stage, while SARS patients showed a gradual decrease in symptom severity over the follow-up period. The results suggest that monitoring and providing psychosocial support and psychiatric treatment may be necessary for COVID-19 patients from acute to convalescent stages.
