Charge and Lattice Dynamics in Excitonic Insulator Ta2NiSe5 Investigated Using Ultrafast Reflection Spectroscopy

Tatsuya Miyamoto et al.

Summary: In this study, the optical properties of the excitonic insulator Ta2NiSe5 were investigated using femtosecond reflection spectroscopy. The results showed that changes in excitation intensity lead to variations in the excitonic gap and a transition from an excitonic insulator to a metal. Analysis of the reflectivity also revealed a correlation between metallization and changes in the lattice structure.

Strongly correlated excitonic insulator in atomic double layers

Liguo Ma et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a strongly correlated two-dimensional excitonic insulator ground state in transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductor double layers, providing direct thermodynamic evidence for the state. Capacitance measurements show that the exciton fluid is compressible but charge-incompressible. An exciton phase diagram reveals both the Mott transition and interaction-stabilized quasi-condensation.

Common microscopic origin of the phase transitions in Ta2NiS5 and the excitonic insulator candidate Ta2NiSe5

Lukas Windgaetter et al.

Summary: Through first-principles calculations, it was found that the structural phase transition in Ta2NiSe5 and Ta2NiS5 is driven by phonon instabilities rather than excitonic instabilities. Phonons break the crystal symmetry, leading to changes in the electronic band structure.

Ultrafast melting and recovery of collective order in the excitonic insulator Ta2NiSe5

Hope M. Bretscher et al.

Summary: The researchers used ultrafast spectroscopy to study the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of Ta2NiSe5, demonstrating that transient reflectivity in the near-infrared range is connected to low-energy physics. They concluded that electronic correlations play a decisive role in the formation of excitonic order.

Detecting photoelectrons from spontaneously formed excitons

Keisuke Fukutani et al.

Summary: Low-temperature ARPES measurements on Ta2NiSe5 provide evidence for the spontaneous formation of excitons, shedding light on their important roles in optoelectronics, photovoltaics, and photosynthesis. The study also reveals the potential for excitons to form spontaneously in small-gap semiconductors or semimetals, leading to Bose-Einstein condensation at low temperatures. This detection of spontaneously formed excitons in a debated excitonic insulator candidate, Ta2NiSe5, guarantees the excitonic insulator nature of the material at low temperature.

Photoinduced modulation of the excitonic resonance via coupling with coherent phonons in a layered semiconductor

S. Mor et al.

Summary: Researchers have demonstrated the optical properties of exciton-phonon coupling in layered semiconductors through experimental and theoretical studies, successfully linking the modulation of exciton energy to optical phonons. This study provides an important foundation for the coherent manipulation of excitonic properties on ultrafast timescales.

Ultrafast evolution of the complex dielectric function of monolayer WS2 after photoexcitation

Stefano Calati et al.

Summary: Transition metal dichalcogenides have been identified as excellent materials for studying exciton physics, with the investigation of excitonic resonance and time evolution being conducted using different measurement techniques. Analytical expressions of exciton lineshape in optical spectra are derived through modeling and fitting methods. Despite different experimental conditions, there is remarkable agreement in the dynamics extracted from two different experiments, demonstrating the equivalence and reliability of the analysis methods employed.

Photoinduced phase transition and associated timescales in the excitonic insulator Ta2NiSe5

Tanusree Saha et al.

Summary: In this study, the nonequilibrium electronic structure and timescales in Ta2NiSe5 were investigated using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The band gap transiently closes within 100 fs after strong photoexcitation, and the rise time of photoemission intensity above the Fermi energy decreases with increasing excitation strength. The experimental observations support an excitonic origin of the band gap in the material.
