Non-invasive testing for early detection of neovascular macular degeneration in unaffected second eyes of older adults: EDNA diagnostic accuracy study

Katie Banister et al.

Summary: Neovascular age-related macular degeneration is a major cause of sight loss, and early detection and treatment are crucial. Current practice involves monitoring the unaffected eye of patients with the disease in one eye, but the diagnostic accuracy of non-invasive tests is unclear. This study aims to determine the diagnostic monitoring performance, cost-effectiveness, and predictive factors of developing the disease in the second eye of patients with unilateral neovascular age-related macular degeneration.

Venous overload choroidopathy: A hypothetical framework for central serous chorioretinopathy and allied disorders

Richard F. Spaide et al.

Summary: Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) is characterized by fluid leakage at the level of the retinal pigment epithelium, leading to macular detachment. Recent evaluations have shown that eyes with CSC have similar choroidal vascular abnormalities as eyes following occlusion of the vortex veins or carotid cavernous sinus fistulas. Abnormal venous outflow from the choroid appears to be a key factor in the pathophysiology of CSC.

Multimodal Imaging Comparison of Polypoidal Choroidal Vasculopathy Between Asian and Caucasian Populations

Federico Corvi et al.

Summary: The study compared the multimodal imaging features of Asian and Caucasian eyes with PCV, finding that Asian eyes had more severe disease characteristics such as lower visual acuity, more hemorrhage, and wider lesion areas, while Caucasian eyes showed more drusen. Ethnic differences in disease characteristics of PCV were revealed through multimodal imaging analysis, suggesting varying pathophysiologic mechanisms based on ethnicity.

Ultra-Widefield Indocyanine Green Angiography Reveals Patterns of Choroidal Venous Insufficiency Influencing Pachychoroid Disease

Summary: This study compares the patterns of choroidal venous drainage between eyes with pachychoroid disease and healthy eyes. The results show significant variability in the proportion of the postequatorial fundus drained by each vortex vein system in pachychoroid eyes, along with the presence of choroidal vascular hyperpermeability (CVH) and intervor-tex venous anastomoses. The study also highlights the correlation between asymmetric choroidal drainage and the presence of CVH and intervor-tex venous anastomoses in areas with maximal choroidal thickness.

Local Geographic Atrophy Growth Rates Not Influenced by Close Proximity to Non-Exudative Type 1 Macular Neovascularization

Omer Trivizki et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of non-exudative type 1 macular neovascularization (MNV) on the growth of geographic atrophy (GA). The results showed a weak positive correlation between the distance to MNV and local GA growth rates, indicating that MNV may have a limited effect on GA growth.

Predictive factors for exudation of quiescent choroidal neovessels detected by OCT angiography in the fellow eyes of eyes treated for a neovascular age-related macular degeneration

Lauriana Solecki et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that the presence of qCNV increased the risk of exudation in the fellow eyes of eyes treated for neovascular AMD. Specific factors such as increase in central macular thickness, pigment epithelial detachment height and width, neovessels' surface on OCT-A, branching pattern, and appearance of a hypointense halo were identified as predictors for exudation. These biomarkers can help in detecting the activation of qCNV for timely antiangiogenic therapy.

Thushanthi Ramakrishnan et al.

Summary: This study aims to assess the short-term and long-term visual outcomes of patients with CNV secondary to angioid streaks treated with anti-VEGF. Results show that anti-VEGF therapy can stabilize visual acuity, but there is a gradual decline observed with 5-10 years of follow-up, with subfoveal CNV showing worse visual outcomes.

Outer Retinal Layer Thickening Predicts the Onset of Exudative Neovascular Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Alessandro Invernizzi et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively observed changes in outer retinal layer (ORL) thickness in eyes with age-related macular degeneration before the development of exudative macular neovascularization (MNV) using sequential optical coherence tomography. The results showed that ORL thickening begins in the area where MNV will develop long before exudation, accelerating significantly in the last 2 months. Predicting the occurrence of exudative MNV could be possible using this simple analysis 2 months in advance.

Summary: The study analyzed different clinical and anatomical features in treatment-naive non-exudative macular neovascularizations secondary to age-related macular disease. Two distinct patterns were identified: short-term activated MNVs with higher growth rate and quiescent MNVs with low growth rate and possible long-term activation. OCT-A features may predict short-term activation but not long-term activation for subclinical MNVs.

Swept-Source OCT Angiographic Characteristics of Treatment-Naive Nonexudative Macular Neovascularization in AMD Prior to Exudation

Mengxi Shen et al.

Summary: The characteristics of treatment-naive nonexudative macular neovascularization in age-related macular degeneration before the onset of exudation were investigated using swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography. The onset of exudation was correlated with less vascularity and smaller pigment epithelial detachment volume, while no significant differences were observed in macular neovascularization area, choriocapillaris flow deficits, mean choroidal thickness, or choroid vascularity index measurements. More investigations are needed to explore these and other anatomical changes as predictors of near-term exudation.

Summary: This study investigated the association of systemic and ocular characteristics with nonexudative neovascularization (NV) in fellow eyes of patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), and identified that hyperlipidemia, triglycerides, and baseline lesion size were significantly associated with nonexudative NV. More than a third of eyes with nonexudative NV at baseline progressed to exudation, with larger baseline lesion size, increase in vessel density, and vessel length density associated with progression to exudation. Monitoring of nonexudative NV eyes is crucial.
