Spatio-temporal variability of avalanche risk in the French Alps

Taline Zgheib et al.

Summary: This study tracks the co-evolution of socio-economic, land cover, and climatic drivers of avalanche risk in three upper basins of the French Alps. The research finds that the occurrence of avalanches has likely increased over the past decades, particularly at higher elevations. Afforestation has taken place in the Guil valley, providing increased protection from avalanches for people downslope. Urban expansion in avalanche-prone areas is prominent in the Upper Maurienne, while more controlled in the Guil valley and Valloire. Overall, avalanche risk has slightly decreased in the Guil valley, remained stationary in Valloire, and strongly increased in the Upper Maurienne. Local dynamics play a crucial role in the evolution of avalanche risk.

Pronounced increase in slope instability linked to global warming: A case study from the eastern European Alps

Sara Savi et al.

Summary: In recent decades, small- to medium-sized mass movements, particularly rockfalls and debris flows, in high-mountain regions of the Italian Alps have increased in frequency and intensity, linked to rising temperatures, permafrost degradation, and an increase in the frequency of rainstorm events. The altitude distribution and triggering mechanisms of rockfall events and debris flows differ, but both are influenced by climate change.

Upslope migration of snow avalanches in a warming climate

Florie Giacona et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the Vosges Mountains in France experienced a significant change in snow avalanche activity from 1850 to 1920, with a decrease in the number of avalanches, reduction in size, shorter seasons, and migration towards higher elevations in response to winter warming.

Improved tree-ring sampling strategy enhances the detection of key meteorological drivers of rockfall activity

R. Mainieri et al.

Summary: Dendrogeomorphic techniques have been used to extract rockfall signals from tree-ring records on forested slopes. By comparing rockfall reconstructions with meteorological records, it was found that including trees located in the most active segments of the plot can better capture summer precipitation as the main driver of rockfall activity. This approach's robustness was confirmed through comparisons with monitoring studies from calcareous cliffs in the Alps.

Deciphering meteorological influencing factors for Alpine rockfalls: a case study in Aosta Valley

Greta Bajni et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the relationships between climate processes and rockfall phenomena in the Aosta Valley of northern Italy from 1990 to 2018. The majority of rockfall events were found to be associated with non-ordinary climatic conditions, with spring events linked to freeze-thaw cycles, autumn events related to effective water inputs, and summer events connected to wet and dry episodes. The findings suggest that different strategies for defining critical thresholds for climate indices can be explored to apply across the study area, with a seasonal trend in the influence of climate on rockfalls.
