Species composition of three size fractions of zooplankton used in routine monitoring of the Barents Sea ecosystem

Hein Rune Skjoldal

Summary: Size fractionation with 2000 and 1000 mu m screens is used by the Institute of Marine Research in Norway in routine monitoring of zooplankton biomass. This study examines the separation of taxa by this procedure and found that individuals are consistently and predictably separated by size. This method can help interpret and improve the ecological relevance of size-fractioned zooplankton biomass results in the Barents Sea and other high-latitude areas.

Seasonal and interannual variability in abundance and population development of Calanus finmarchicus at the western entrance to the Barents Sea, 1995-2019

Hein Rune Skjoldal et al.

Summary: Data was collected on copepodid abundance and stage composition of Calanus finmarchicus over 25 years (1995-2019) from four stations along an oceanographic transect across the western Barents Sea Opening. The data showed an increase in copepodite abundance in the water column from winter to summer, with higher densities observed in the southern stations compared to the northern stations.

Diet and trophic structure of fishes in the Barents Sea: Seasonal and spatial variations

Elena Eriksen et al.

Summary: The study found that the trophic structure of fish communities in the Barents Sea shows some variations in both spatial and seasonal aspects. However, the main groups of piscivores, planktivores, and benthivores remain consistent across seasons. Planktivores, especially, show clear signs of seasonality as they rely on the 'pulse' of new generations of zooplankton, such as Calanus finmarchicus, developing in spring and summer.

Physical manifestations and ecological implications of Arctic Atlantification

Randi B. Ingvaldsen et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the physical and ecological manifestations, drivers, and implications of Atlantification in a hotspot region of climate change spanning the southern Barents Sea to the Eurasian Basin. Atlantification is driven by anomalous Atlantic Water inflows and is modulated by local processes, leading to ecosystem responses such as increased production and northward expansion of boreal species. Dedicated, multidisciplinary observations and advanced modeling experiments are urgently needed to better understand the large-scale changes in the system and specific mechanisms responsible for local and remote changes.
