Treatment of wastewater from adhesive-producing industries by electrocoagulation and electrochemical oxidation

Jincheng Lu et al.

Summary: In this study, electrocoagulation and electrochemical technology were used to treat adhesive wastewater containing high COD and ammonia nitrogen. The results showed that the combination of electrocoagulation and electrochemical oxidation methods effectively removed COD and ammonia nitrogen, demonstrating its potential for treating adhesive wastewater.

Recovery of microbial fuel cells with high COD molasses wastewater and analysis of the microbial community

Juntao Yang et al.

Summary: The double-chamber microbial fuel cell shows effective treatment of molasses wastewater, but performance declines with increasing influent concentration due to accumulation of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and low pH. However, the MFC exhibits strong self-recovery capability, able to regain high efficiency after a certain period of time.

Hydrous ferric oxides (HFO's) precipitated from contaminated waters at several abandoned Sb deposits - Interdisciplinary assessment

Bronislava Lalinska-Volekova et al.

Summary: This study presents a comprehensive analysis of ochre sediments precipitated from Fe-rich drainage waters contaminated by arsenic and antimony. The samples were characterized from the mineralogical, geochemical, and microbiological aspects. The results reveal the dominance of bacteria in the ochre samples, specifically Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes. The microbial communities play a significant role in the mobilization or immobilization of potentially toxic elements.

Pyrite-mediated advanced oxidation processes: Applications, mechanisms, and enhancing strategies

Biao Song et al.

Summary: This article reviews the recent studies on pyrite-mediated advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for wastewater treatment. Pyrite is a low-cost catalyst with the ability to release Fe2+ and self-regulate solution pH. Enhancements to pyrite-mediated AOPs can be achieved by converting pyrite into nanoparticles, using ultrasound and light irradiation, and adding exogenous substances. Future development directions include toxicity research, mechanism research, and technological coupling.

Enhancement effects and pathways of nitrogen removal by plant-based carbon source in integrated vertical flow constructed wetlands

Yucong Zheng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the enhancement effects and mechanisms of alkali pretreated reeds as a plant-based carbon source on nitrogen removal in integrated vertical flow constructed wetlands (IVCW). The results showed that the alkali pretreated reeds significantly improved nitrogen removal efficiency, primarily through increasing denitrification and anaerobic ammonia oxidation processes. The findings contribute to efficient nitrogen removal in constructed wetlands by enhancing denitrification pathways.

Biochar based constructed wetland for secondary effluent treatment: Waste resource utilization

Feifei Zheng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of sewage sludge and cattail litter as raw materials to prepare biochar, which was then used as filling materials in constructed wetlands (CWs) to enhance the treatment of secondary effluent. The results showed that the biochar-filled CWs had better removal efficiency for total nitrogen and phosphorus compared to the control group. The biochar also reduced nitrous oxide emissions and promoted the activities of key enzymes involved in pollutant removal. High-throughput sequencing revealed the enrichment of microorganisms related to nitrogen removal in the biochar-filled CWs. This research demonstrates the potential for energy-saving treatment and waste resource recovery in wastewater treatment plants.

Metagenomics reveals functional species and microbial mechanisms of an enriched thiosulfate-driven denitratation consortia

Yihui Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a thiosulfate-driven denitratation system was successfully established with high nitrite accumulation efficiency. Thiosulfate preferred the reduction of nitrate over nitrite, but after depletion, sulfur served as the main electron donor favoring nitrite reduction and constraining nitrite accumulation. Metagenomic sequencing identified key microbe species and metabolic pathways contributing to high NAE in the TDD system.

Tongdou Zhu et al.

Summary: The study showed that IVCW achieved high removal efficiencies for COD, NH4+-N, TP, TN, and TSS, while VCW had a lower efficiency for TN removal. There was no significant seasonal difference in TP removal, with a strong positive correlation between influent TP load and removed load.
