Fluctuation-induced quantum friction in nanoscale water flows

Nikita Kavokine et al.

Summary: This study develops a quantum theory of the solid-liquid interface, revealing a new contribution to friction due to the coupling of charge fluctuations in the liquid to electronic excitations in the solid. The research demonstrates a marked difference in quantum friction between the water-graphene and water-graphite interface, potentially explaining the radius-dependent slippage of water in carbon nanotubes.

Quantitative detection of hydrogen peroxide in rain, air, exhaled breath, and biological fluids by NMR spectroscopy

Tayeb Kakeshpour et al.

Summary: Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) plays a key role in environmental chemistry, biology, and medicine. Quantitative detection of H2O2 is challenging due to its low concentration compared to water. This study demonstrates that optimized NMR spectroscopy allows direct, interference-free measurements of submicromolar levels of H2O2 in various fluids. The study also confirms the spontaneous generation of H2O2 in microdroplets formed on a hydrophobic surface, which can interfere with atmospheric H2O2 measurements. The antimicrobial activity and seasonal variation of H2O2 may be linked to respiratory viral diseases.

On the formation of hydrogen peroxide in water microdroplets

Adair Gallo et al.

Summary: Recent research on the formation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in water microdroplets has attracted significant attention. The presence of ozone (O-3) in the air has been found to have the most significant impact on H2O2 formation in these water microdroplets. Increased gas-liquid surface area facilitates the conversion of O-3 into H2O2.

Contact-electro-catalysis for the degradation of organic pollutants using pristine dielectric powders

Ziming Wang et al.

Summary: Research has shown that electrons transferred through contact-electrification can be used for catalyzing reactions without conventional catalysts. This new catalytic principle, termed contact-electro-catalysis, has been proven effective for various dielectric materials, such as Teflon, Nylon-6,6, and rubber. This expands the range of catalytic materials and offers a new approach for catalytic processes through mechano-induced contact-electrification.

Contact Electrification at the Liquid-Solid Interface

Shiquan Lin et al.

Summary: Interfaces between a liquid and a solid are crucial in various scientific fields. Recent studies have found that electron transfer plays a dominant role in the formation of the charge layer at the interface. This review discusses the importance of electron transfer in liquid-solid contact electrification and introduces the triboelectric nanogenerator technique as a tool for probing charge transfer at such interfaces.

Revisiting the Effect of the Air-Water Interface of UltrasonicallyAtomized Water Microdroplets on H2O2Formation

Duy Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study reinvestigated the influence of ultrasonic cavitation, surface modification of droplets, and solutes in the bulk liquid on H2O2 production. The results confirm that H2O2 formation originates from cavitation in bulk solutions, and the air-water interface of water microdroplets itself does not generate H2O2.

Glass surface as strong base, 'green' heterogeneous catalyst and degradation reagent

Yangjie Li et al.

Summary: Systematic screening of accelerated chemical reactions at solid/solution interfaces using desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry revealed that glass surfaces can accelerate various base-catalyzed reactions, acting as strong bases in protic solvents and as 'green' heterogeneous catalysts in aprotic solvents. Additionally, glass surfaces were found to act as degradation reagents for phospholipids, indicating potential issues with storing base/nucleophile-labile compounds in glass containers.
