Damage mechanism of carbon fiber reinforced plastic pipe based on reverse and forward curvature drilling

Shujian Li et al.

Summary: Metal-composite shaft parts composed of metal joints and composite pipes have advantages of lightweight, high strength, and stable axial load transmission, making them highly sought after in the fields of unmanned aerial vehicles and new energy vehicles. This study analyzes the material damage mechanism of hole-making in carbon fiber reinforced plastic pipes through theoretical analysis and experimental verification, providing reasonable suggestions for machining parameters selection.

Microstructural investigation and hole quality evaluation in S2/FM94 glass-fibre composites under dry and cryogenic conditions

Khaled Giasin et al.

Summary: A new environmentally friendly cryogenic cooling technique was used for drilling S2/FM94 glass fibre reinforced epoxy composite in a liquid nitrogen bath. The study aimed to investigate the effects of drilling parameters and cryogenic cooling on cutting forces, surface roughness, hardness, and delamination factor at hole entry and exit sides. The results showed that spindle speed and cryogenic cooling had the most significant influence on cutting forces and surface roughness, while cryogenic cooling had the most significant influence on increasing hardness and delamination size at the hole entry and exit sides.

The effects of back-up on drilling machinability of filament wound GFRP composite pipes: Mechanical characterization and drilling tests

Sakir Yazman

Summary: The filament winding (FW) method is preferred in manufacturing high-pressure vessels, pressure pipelines, and construction components. Drilling-induced damages negatively affect the mechanical properties of composite pipes during service, highlighting the importance of determining optimum cutting parameters and a suitable back-up material. Using a back-up material in drilling composite pipes reduces delamination, borehole damages, and surface roughness, while also preventing the propagation of interlaminar cracks around the hole.
