Evidence for continental rifting from two episodes of mid-Neoproterozoic silicic magmatism in the northeastern Yangtze Block, China

Qian-ru Cai et al.

Summary: The study of mid-Neoproterozoic rocks in the northeastern Yangtze Block revealed a transition in magmatism sources from ancient lower crustal to juvenile middle-upper crustal, indicating high-temperature meteoric water-rock interactions. This provides new insights into the tectonic evolution driven by upwelling asthenosphere during the mid-Neoproterozoic rifting of the Yangtze Block from Rodinia.

Evidence for discrete Archean microcontinents in the Yangtze Craton

Tian Zhao et al.

Summary: The study reports the discovery of Archean rocks in a new area in the southern Dabie orogenic belt, providing insights into the Archean continental architecture. The Xishui gneiss in the Yangtze Craton exhibits peraluminous characteristics and high-K talc-alkaline series, with protolith ages dating back to 2.51-2.47 Ga. The crustal evolution in the eight exposed Archean terranes suggests that they were independent microcontinents, which amalgamated to form the present-day Yangtze Craton around 2.0-1.9 Ga during the assembly of the Columbia supercontinent.
