Central China Orogenic Belt and amalgamation of East Asian continents

Yunpeng Dong et al.

Summary: The Central China Orogenic Belt (CCOB) consists of multiple important orogens that record the continental collision history of the North China, South China, Qaidam, Tarim and Qiangtang Blocks. From around 550 million years ago, the breakup of the Rodinia supercontinent led to the formation of the Proto-Tethys Ocean, and subsequent processes such as spreading and subduction shaped the evolution of the CCOB. The CCOB has undergone a complex tectonic evolution from the early Proto-Tethys to the later Paleo-Tethys domains, leading to the formation and closure of various oceans and back-arc basins.

The Late Great Unconformity of the Central Canadian Shield

C. P. Sturrock et al.

Summary: The Great Unconformity is a widespread surface separating Precambrian rocks from overlying Phanerozoic sedimentary sequences, with debated causes and implications. New thermochronologic data from the central Canadian Shield suggest that the Precambrian basement cooled and experienced erosion events between 650 and 440 million years ago, followed by later reheating during burial. This late Great Unconformity in the region implies multiple temporally distinct erosion events with differing footprints and mechanisms.

Zircon (U-Th)/He thermochronology reveals pre-Great Unconformity paleotopography in the Grand Canyon region, USA

B. A. Peak et al.

Summary: The Great Unconformity is a significant geological feature that coincides with a mysterious period in Earth's history, spanning the assembly and breakup of the supercontinent Rodinia and the Snowball Earth glaciations. By using zircon (U-Th)/He thermochronology, researchers explored the erosion history beneath the Great Unconformity in the Grand Canyon region of Arizona, uncovering evidence of a paleo high that may have limited deposition conditions.

Tectonic controls on basement exhumation in the southern Rocky Mountains (United States): The power of combined zircon (U-Th)/He and K-feldspar 40Ar/39Ar thermochronology

Jason W. Ricketts et al.

Summary: The study in the Rocky Mountain region evaluates the timing of exhumation of basement rocks at five locations, revealing multiple pulses of basement cooling occurring from 1.3 billion to 0.9 billion years ago. These data suggest a tectonic control on basement exhumation and the formation of the Precambrian-Cambrian Great Unconformity.

New Ediacara-type fossils and late Ediacaran stratigraphy from the northern Qaidam Basin (China): Paleogeographic implications

Ke Pang et al.

Summary: This study reports a newly discovered terminal Ediacaran biotic assemblage in northwestern China, containing Ediacara-type fossils. The co-occurrence of these fossils helps constrain the depositional age and reveals the late Ediacaran glaciation.

New materials reveal Shaanxilithes as a Cloudina-like organism of the late Ediacaran

Xin Wang et al.

Summary: Shaanxilithes is a potential index fossil of the late Ediacaran period due to its widespread distribution and narrow stratigraphic range. Its actual morphology and taxonomic classification have long been controversial, with varied interpretations of its biological affinities. New research has revealed Shaanxilithes to be classified as a cloudinid based on anatomical details.
