Mesoproterozoic magmatism redefines the tectonics and paleogeography of the SW Yangtze Block, China

Gui-Mei Lu et al.

Summary: A new suite of amphibolites in the SW Yangtze and three suites of late Mesoproterozoic granites in the same area have been identified. These amphibolites were formed around 1175±5Ma while the granites were emplaced during 1060-1042Ma, exhibiting characteristics of A-type granites. Zircon Hf-O isotopic data revealed two subgroups of granites derived from different partial melting processes.

Fragmentation of South China from greater India during the Rodinia-Gondwana transition

Wei Wang et al.

Summary: Late Tonian to Cambrian sedimentary sequences in northwestern India and South China demonstrate a common provenance and similarities in lithostratigraphy. A shared Neoproterozoic extensional magmatic event occurred around 800-700 Ma. During the Cryogenian period, there was a distinct change in sedimentary provenance in these regions.

Reworking of Hadean continental crust in the Dabie orogen: Evidence from the Muzidian granitic gneisses

Xiao-Fei Qiu et al.

Summary: The study on the Muzidian granitic gneisses in the northern Dabie orogen shows that they were formed by reworking of the Hadean continental crust, providing strong evidence for the presence of Hadean continental crust in the northern Yangtze block. These Hadean rocks resided in the continental crust of the Yangtze block for over 1700 Ma before being reworked.

The 1.14 Ga mafic intrusions in the SW Yangtze Block, South China: Records of late Mesoproterozoic intraplate magmatism

Fenglin Chen et al.

Summary: This study presents new dataset of late Mesoproterozoic diabases in the southwestern Yangtze Block, showing tholeiitic composition, negligible crustal contamination, and likely origin from partial melting of a depleted asthenosphere mantle source. The diabases rule out interaction with subduction-related materials and display characteristics typical of within-plate basalts, indicating intense continental rifting in the region during the late Mesoproterozoic. The widespread intraplate magmatism in the Yangtze Block at 1.2-1.1 Ga suggests that it may not have been involved in the Rodinia assembly at the time.

Summary: The Huili Group in the Yangtze Block is important for understanding the tectonic history of the South China Block. The lower Huili Group is characterized by detrital zircon grains with ages from 2.80-2.40 Ga, 2.34-1.72 Ga, and 1.68-1.19 Ga, while the upper Huili Group contains grains with ages between 2.00-1.25 Ga and 1.2-1.0 Ga.

Peng Wu et al.

Summary: The Changba Complex in the SCB records the accretion of juvenile island arcs and subsequent reworking of both juvenile and ancient crustal materials, highlighting the crustal growth and geodynamical evolution of the northern margin of the South China Block during the Neoproterozoic in response to the assembly of Rodinia.

Late Mesoproterozoic low-P/T-type metamorphism in the North Wulan terrane: Implications for the assembly of Rodinia

Lu Wang et al.

Summary: Regional metamorphism plays a crucial role in understanding lithosphere evolution, especially in orogenic systems. This study on the North Wulan terrane in the Greater Tarim block in NW China provides new insights on the evolutionary history of the region during the assembly of Rodinia. The findings suggest a prolonged subduction-to-collision process in the Greater Tarim block around 1.1-0.9 billion years ago, positioning it between western Laurentia and India-East Antarctica.

Pre-Neoproterozoic continental growth of the Yangtze Block: From continental rifting to subduction-accretion

Jun-Yong Li et al.

Summary: The Yangtze Block exemplifies the gradual formation of cratons since the Archean, and it is suggested to be divided into north and south parts due to distinct rock configuration and tectonic evolution. The block experienced Columbia assembly, supercontinent breakup, and accretion of terranes, involving extensional tectonics and seafloor spreading. These processes, along with mantle input and terrane accretion, contributed to the continental growth and reshaping of the Yangtze Block.

A missing piece between Laurentia and the North China Craton in Rodinia: Evidence from metasedimentary rocks of the North Qinling Terrane in central China

Fang-Yuan Sun et al.

Summary: The North Qinling Terrane was a microcontinent subducted beneath the North China Craton during the Early Paleozoic. Metasedimentary rocks from the terrane show upper crust-like compositions and metamorphic ages around 510-490 Ma. Detrital zircon U-Pb ages suggest deposition ages of 1110-960 Ma, ca. 960 Ma, and ca. 860 Ma, revealing their origin in a collisional setting.

Xiaozhuang Cui et al.

Summary: The newly identified Cuoke Complex in South China contains voluminous early Precambrian granitoids, providing key information for the early evolution of the Yangtze Block. The complex consists of granitoids with different crystallization ages and magmatic activities, likely derived from reworking of ancient crustal materials or remelting of juvenile continental crust.

The ca. 1.18-1.14 Ga A-type granites in the southwestern Yangtze Block, South China: New evidence for late Mesoproterozoic continental rifting

Mingda Huang et al.

Summary: The late Mesoproterozoic tectonic history of the Yangtze Block in South China remains poorly understood due to limited geological records from this age. Newly discovered monzogranites from this region provide insights into continental rifting and oceanic plate subduction, suggesting that a coherent supercontinent did not exist during this time. These findings support the hypothesis that the Yangtze Block was an isolated plate before drifting towards the Rodinia supercontinent around 1.1 billion years ago.

Neoproterozoic geodynamics of South China and implications on the Rodinia configuration: The Kunyang Group revisited

Li Sun et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the sedimentological, geochronological, and geochemical data of the Kunyang Group in the Yangtze Block, shedding light on its crucial position in the Rodinia supercontinent and regional geodynamic evolution. The findings suggest a transition from continental rift to passive continental margin setting, followed by an active continental margin setting, with implications for the tectonic evolution of the South China Block and reconstruction of the Rodinia supercontinent.

Late Neoproterozoic-early Paleozoic basin evolution in the Cathaysia Block, South China: Implications of spatio-temporal provenance changes on the paleogeographic reconstructions in supercontinent cycles

Summary: The late Neoproterozoic to early Paleozoic strata in the Cathaysia Block of South China show connections with adjacent terranes and orogens in East Gondwana, with significant sediment input from the eastern Indian and western Australia regions. The decrease in early Grenvillian components in late Ediacaran strata can be linked to the Pinjarra Orogeny, which blocked detritus transport from Australia.
