Production of powders for metal additive manufacturing applications using surface grinding

Harish Singh Dhami et al.

Summary: In this study, nearly monodisperse AISI 52100 steel powders for additive manufacturing (AM) were produced using surface grinding. Their usability for metal AM was evaluated using a directed energy deposition setup, and they were found to perform as well as conventional gas-atomized powders in achieving defect-free metallurgical bonding.

Particle size dependent microstructure evolution of inert gas atomized nickel base superalloy powders

G. L. G. S. B. Srinivas Kumar et al.

Summary: In this study, the physical properties, chemical composition, morphology, micro-segregation, and orientation distribution of grains in an experimental nickel-based superalloy powder produced through inert gas atomization technique were characterized. The atomized powders exhibited a near-spherical morphology with an average particle size of 61 μm. Micro-chemical analysis revealed the distribution of elements such as Ti, Mo, Ta, and Hf at interdendritic regions regardless of particle size. The degree of micro-segregation was found to be closely related to the cooling rate and particle size. EBSD analysis showed random texture in the particles, with the number of grains per particle decreasing as the particle size decreased. The nucleation event was found to occur on particle surfaces, as evidenced by the dominant presence of low-angle grain boundaries (LAGBs) near the particle surfaces. Selective growth of favorably oriented nuclei was observed toward the core of the particle, characterized by the presence of high-angle grain boundaries (HAGBs) in the particle interior. The present study elucidated a mechanistic understanding correlating the evolution of grain size distribution and micro-segregation with the droplet solidification process.

Effect of particle size and formulation on powder rheology

Shirin Enferad et al.

Summary: The study investigated the relationship between flow properties and formulation of powders with mean particle sizes of 100 and 500 μm. Different surface treatments and powder core compositions were found to have an impact on the powder flowability, with noticeable changes observed in surface structure and particle size. Powder compressibility was not significantly different among the powders, and all were found to be hardly fluidizable due to their high particle weight.

Compaction and Densification Characteristics of Iron Powder/Coal Fly Ash Mixtures Processed by Powder Metallurgy Technique

Amarjit Singh et al.

Summary: This study elucidates the compaction and densification behavior of iron powder and coal fly ash mixtures during powder metallurgy processing. The results show that an increased amount of CFA inclusion has a reverse effect on the density of the composite, while increasing compacting pressure and sintering temperature have linear influences on density.

Summary: This study examined the influence of particle shape on final part density in laser powder bed fusion, finding correlations between powder properties and their impact on part density. However, improvements in powder shape beyond a certain threshold did not lead to higher final part density.

Quantification of mechanisms governing the angle of repose, angle of tilting, and Hausner ratio to estimate the flowability of particulate materials

Haim Kalman

Summary: The angle of repose, angle of tilting, and Hausner ratio are commonly used parameters to estimate the flowabilities of particulate materials. A study of 65 samples revealed that only one mechanism affecting the angle of repose is directly related to flowability. The performance of each material in relation to these parameters varies, and only the Hausner ratio can be reasonably defined by a single function.
