Influence of particle size on powder rheology and effects on mass flow during directed energy deposition additive manufacturing

A. D. Iams et al.

Summary: Metal powders used in directed energy deposition additive manufacturing show variations in performance based on their particle characteristics and rheological properties, which affect powder flow and performance. The study found that lean grade stainless steel powder consistently displayed the lowest mass flow rates, indicating higher flow resistance due to a shift towards larger particle size distribution. Advanced powder and rheological characterization tools were necessary to identify differences between powders and understand their impact on flow behavior and performance.

Multifluid model simulations of gravitational instabilities in fluidized binary granular materials

Qiang Guo et al.

Summary: Predicting granular flow using continuum approaches is fundamental to advance granular physics and industrial applications. Recent studies have found a series of gravitational instabilities in bi-disperse granular materials, including a Rayleigh-Taylor analog, a granular bubble rising, a granular droplet splitting, and particle segregation. Through multifluid modeling, these instabilities can be simulated, and it is shown that frictional particle stress and solids-solids drag are necessary to capture critical flow features.

Structured bubbling in layered gas-fluidized beds subject to vibration: A CFD-DEM study

Qiang Guo et al.

Summary: Bubble dynamics in gas fluidized beds are mathematically chaotic and difficult to predict. Various methods have been proposed to alter the bubble dynamics for specific processes. It has been shown that pulsed gas flow and vibration can transform the chaotic motion of gas bubbles into a structured pattern. This structured bubbling pattern is independent of the system width.

Experimental validation of the extraction of a particle-particle cohesion model (square-force) from simple bulk measurements (defluidization in a rheometer)

Ipsita Mishra et al.

Summary: The study aims to experimentally assess the square-force cohesion model, which can accurately describe particle-particle cohesion. The research method is based on defluidization experiments and CFD-DEM simulations, and the experimental results are consistent with the predictions of the angle of repose.

DEM modeling of fine powder convection in a continuous vibrating bed reactor

Julia Hartig et al.

Summary: Continuous vibrating spatial particle ALD reactors were developed for high powder throughput with minimized footprint. The reactors operate below fluidization using linear vibration, and discrete element-method simulations were performed to study solid flow behavior. High-frequency excitations and sticking avoidance in horizontal conveyors at low accelerations were revealed, leading to a proposed novel sawtooth excitation for cohesive fine powders convection at low flow velocities.
