Mesenchymal stromal cell-based therapy for cartilage regeneration in knee osteoarthritis

Xiao-Na Xiang et al.

Summary: Osteoarthritis is a common degenerative disease that causes high socioeconomic costs and disability rates. The knee joint is most commonly affected, characterized by progressive destruction of articular cartilage, loss of extracellular matrix, and inflammation. MSC-based therapy has been explored as a new regenerative treatment for knee osteoarthritis. However, the detailed functions and mechanisms of MSC-based therapy, especially for cartilage regeneration, have not been explained.

Articular Cartilage Inspired the Construction of LTi-DA-PVA Composite Structure with Excellent Surface Wettability and Low Friction Performance

Lingling Cui et al.

Summary: A novel 'soft-hard' structure was designed for improving the surface wettability and tribological properties of Ti6Al4V alloy for artificial joints, fabricated through laser texturing, surface dopamine modification, and PVA hydrogel casting. The synergistic effect of the lower Ti6Al4V substrate's load-bearing capacity and the upper PVA hydrogel layer's biphasic lubrication resulted in a significantly reduced friction coefficient, similar to natural cartilage. The introduction of dopamine significantly enhanced the interfacial bonding performance between the substrate and the hydrogel layer, providing an effective method for enhancing the surface properties of Ti6Al4V as artificial joints.
