Polymer/clay mixed matrix membranes have attracted attention for their unique characteristics. This article reviews the recent literature on polymer/montmorillonite clay-based membranes and discusses the formation of clay nanostructures in the polymer matrix, as well as different fabrication types.
Polymer/clay mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) have piqued attention in recent years over pure polymer membranes due to their unique characteristics, such as flame resistance, mechanical capabilities, gas barrier qualities and thermal properties. This article reviews the recent ten years of literature on polymer/montmorillonite (MMT) clay-based MMMs preparation mechanism, morphology and their potential for gas separation. In addition, the MMT clay morphology, possible clay nanostructure formation after mixing in the polymer matrix as well as the different fabrication types of polymer/MMT clay MMMs were discussed. Eventually, this review article was briefly proposed the future direction in polymer/MMT clay membrane preparation techniques to further develop the performance of montmorillonite MMMs in gas separation.
