Design of gel-to-sol UCST transition peptides by controlling polypeptide β-sheet nanostructures

Hongyu Zhu et al.

Summary: Creating stimulus-responsive materials solely by controlling polypeptide secondary nanostructures is challenging. The synthesized diblock copolymer exhibited gel-to-sol UCST transition behavior in an aqueous solution, with the transition temperature window easily adjusted by changing the copolymer concentration or length of the PBnLT block. The disassembly of initial beta-sheet nanoassemblies caused nanofibril transformation to spherical aggregates with increasing temperature, leading to a gel-to-sol UCST transition. This result inspires a brand-new strategy for the structural design and functional control of materials.

Dual thermoresponsive mPEG-b-poly(O-benzyl-L-threonine acid) hydrogel based on β-sheet nano-structural disassembly and PEG dehydration

Hongyu Zhu et al.

Summary: Designing novel responsive materials by controlling the secondary structure of polypeptides, especially beta-sheet, is a challenging task. A dual responsive diblock copolymer mPEG-b-PBnLT exhibited unique gel-to-sol-to-gel transition behavior with temperature, influenced by the disassembly of beta-sheet nanoassemblies and dehydration of PEG segments. This stimuli-responsive structural design provides a new strategy for functional control of polypeptide materials.
