Why big brains? A comparison of models for both primate and carnivore brain size evolution

Summary: Despite extensive research, the factors influencing brain size variation remain uncertain. Recent studies suggest ecology is a better predictor of brain size in primates and carnivores. While ecological factors are consistently associated with brain size in primates, sociality may also play a role; in carnivores, home range size is a significant influence on brain size. Social brain hypothesis is not well supported, indicating sociality may be limited to certain taxa.
