Considerations for Increasing Racial, Ethnic, Gender, and Sexual Diversity in HIV Cure-Related Research with Analytical Treatment Interruptions: A Qualitative Inquiry

Karine Dube et al.

Summary: Despite the disproportionate impact of HIV on transgender individuals, cisgender women, and racial and ethnic minority groups, they are still underrepresented in HIV cure research. As HIV cure trials expand, there is an increasing focus on mitigating risks for the partners of participants in analytical treatment interruption trials. To ensure the acceptability and effectiveness of ATI trials in underrepresented populations, attention must be given to gender dynamics, intersectionality, equity, stigma, and partnership dynamics.

Characterization of HIV Preexposure Prophylaxis Use Behaviors and HIV Incidence Among US Adults in an Integrated Health Care System

J. Carlo Hojilla et al.

Summary: This study found that gaps in the PrEP continuum of care were more likely to occur in young adults aged 18-25, African American individuals, Latinx individuals, women, individuals with lower socioeconomic status, and individuals with a substance use disorder. Attrition along the continuum was associated with incident HIV infection. Comprehensive strategies are needed to improve PrEP continuum of care outcomes in high-priority populations.

The wisdom of mistrust: qualitative insights from transgender women who participated in PrEP research in Lima, Peru

Amaya Perez-Brumer et al.

Summary: The study found that mistrust towards PrEP among transgender women is a reflection of their experiences, highlighting the broken trust between communities, researchers, and the research enterprise. This mistrust is amplified through perceived paradoxes that suggest transgender women are key experimental participants but not the target users of PrEP outside of research settings. The findings emphasize the urgent need to reframe mistrust as a systemic institutional- and industry-level problem in global HIV science.
